Lisa Marie Reviews An Oscar Winner: From Here To Eternity (dir by Fred Zinnemann)


“The boldest book of our time,” shouts the poster art for 1953’s From Here To Eternity, “honestly, fearlessly brought to the screen!”

And indeed, James Jones’s novel was brought to the screen about as boldly as a studio film could be brought in 1953.  The book told the story of several soldiers in the days immediately before the attack on Pearl Harbor.  The Production Code was still in effect and, as a result, a few changes were made to the film’s plot.  Donna Reed played Lorene, a character who is described as being a “hostess” at social club but who, in the book, worked at a brothel that was popular with the soldiers from a nearby army base.  In the book, an unfaithful husband gives his wife a venereal disease that leads to her getting a hysterectomy.  In the movie, Karen’s (Deborah Kerr) hysterectomy was the result of a miscarriage that occurred after she discovered her husband was being unfaithful.  The book was critical of the Army and featured officers who faced no consequences for their actions.  The movie definitely presents the enlisted men as being at the mercy of officers but the worst of the officers is ultimately disciplined.  The movie was made with the cooperation of the U.S. Army and, as a result, the film’s villains — like Captain Holmes (Philip Ober) and the monstrous Fatso Judson (Ernest Borgnine) — were portrayed as being aberrations who did not represent the Army as a whole.  That said, the film version of From Here To Eternity is still a powerful, moving, and daring film.  What couldn’t be shown on screen is still suggested.  One might not see the specifics of what Fatso Judson does to Maggio (Frank Sinatra) in the stockade but it’s not difficult to figure out.

The film follows one company of soldiers as they laugh, fight, and fall in love while stationed in Hawaii.  They spend time training for a war that most of them think will never come.  Captain Holmes is more concerned with his regimental boxing team than the prospect of going to war and is confused when Private Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) refuses to stop back into the ring.  Prewitt, who takes pride in his ability as a bugler, quit boxing after he blinded an opponent in the ring but Holmes doesn’t care.  Holmes wants another trophy for his office.  He orders Sgt. Warden (Burt Lancaster) to make life Hell for Prewitt until Prewitt agrees to box.  Warden, who has seen a lot of officers come and go and who has been tempted to become an non-commissioned officer himself, is having an affair with Holmes’s wife, Karen.  Meanwhile, Prewitt and his friend Maggio spend their time looking forward to the weekends they’re allowed to spend off the base.  Prewitt has fallen in love with Lenore but, as with all the men in From Here To Eternity, Prewitt’s true love is for the army.  Even with Holmes pressuring him to box, Prewitt’s loyalty is to the men with whom he serves.  There’s a lot of drama, a lot of death, and a lot of romance.  This is the film in which Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr make out on the beach while the tide rolls in.  But, when Pearl Harbor is attacked, all of the drama and all of the romance is forgotten as America goes to war.

From Here To Eternity is one of the best films of the 1950s and certainly one of the more worthy winners for Best Picture.  Intelligently directed, wonderfully acted, deliriously romantic, and finally rather sad, it’s a film that embraces the melodrama without ever hitting a false note.  Burt Lancaster’s rugged weariness, Montgomery Clift’s method sensitivity, Frank Sinatra’s naturalism, Ernest Borgnine’s crudeness, Deborah Kerr’s classiness, and Donna Reed’s earnestness all come together to create a film in which the characters feel real and alive.  Warden, Prewitt, Lenore, Karen, and Maggio are all interesting, multi-faceted people, trying to find some sort of happiness in the shadow of an inevitable war.  The viewer may sometimes have mixed feelings about their actions (and Borgnine’s Judson is one of the most loathsome roles that the normally likable Borgnine ever played) but you never cease to care about them and their stories.  With all of the characters and the affairs and the secrets, From Here To Eternity can feel like a soap opera but it’s also a portrait of a world that is on the verge of changing forever.

A few years ago, I attended a screening of From Here To Eternity at the Dallas Angelika.  This is a film that definitely deserves to be seen on the big screen.  From the famous scene on the beach to the attack on Pearl Harbor to the tragic final moments, this is a big movie that deals with big emotions and big moments.  It’s one of the best.

Late Night Retro Television Review: CHiPs 2.6 “Trick or Treat”

It’s a Halloween episode!

Episode 2.6 “Trick or Treat”

(Dir by Phil Bondelli, originally aired on October 21st, 1978)

It’s Halloween in Los Angeles!  That means that people will be asking for treats and playing tricks and getting into all sorts of trouble.  But, for the California Highway Patrol, it’s just another day and night of trying to keep everyone safe.

Ponch’s day gets off to a bad start when he and Baker chase a van onto a movie lot.  The van’s driver, it turns out, was speeding because he was transporting thirteen black cats to a film set.  When Ponch and Baker finally pull over the van, the cats get loose and all 13 of them march past Ponch.  Later, at headquarters, Ponch is forced by a narrow hallway to walk under a ladder.  *GASP*  Ponch insists that he’s not superstitious but he also won’t stop talking about his encounter with the black cats.

Ponch is in for some bad luck and it shows up in the form of an 8 year-old named Tommy who squirts Ponch with perfume while Ponch is patrolling the neighborhood.  Ponch tells Tommy that playing tricks like that could lead to him getting arrested and hauled off to jail.  Tommy panics and runs away from home.  Guess who gets the blame for that?

That’s not all that’s going on this Halloween night.  (Since this episode aired in 1978, it’s also the night that He came home.)  Eddie (Bobby Van) and his girlfriend, Susan (Elaine Joyce), are holding up convenience stores.  (Susan distracts the cashiers by wearing a translucent ghost costume.)  An older woman (Fran Ryan) is stealing bags of candy from young trick-or-treaters.  Paula (Barbara Leigh) and Karen (Jenny Sherman) are stealing speed limit signs as part of a superfun scavenger hunt.  And Sgt. Getraer is determined to figure out the identity of the Hobgoblin, a member of the highway patrol who reads macabre poetry over the police radio throughout the night.

Fear not, though …. everything works out in the end.  Tommy is not only found hiding out in an abandoned house but Ponch is the one who finds and rescues him.  Eddie and Susan get chased and arrested after trying to pull one robbery too many.  (Their van crashes as a result of two teenagers throwing eggs on the windshield.  Some tricks are good, apparently.)  The old woman turns out to be a distraught suburbanite who lost her engagement ring and who thinks that she may have tossed it in some kid’s trick-or-treat bag.  (Fortunately, the ring is found in her candy bowl and no one presses charges.)  Paula and Karen lose the scavenger hunt but they win future dates with Ponch and Baker.  And Getraer figures out that Artie Grossman is the Hobgoblin.  In the end, everyone smiles and laugh and that’s the important thing.

For a Halloween episode, Trick or Treat was rather low-key but that’s okay.  I liked the day-in-the-life approach that the episode took and it was fun to see that even the members of the fearsome highway patrol were capable of enjoying the holiday.  We should have as good a Halloween as Ponch and Baker.

The TSL Horror Grindhouse: Garden of the Dead (dir by John Hayes)


The 1972 film, Garden of the Dead, takes place in a prison camp that sits out in the middle of what appears to the bayous.  The prisoners spend their days working on the chain gang, breaking rocks and cleaning highways.  The tough-as-nails guards spend their days watching the prisoners and carrying around their rifles.  This is the type of prison camp where the prisoners are all talkative and boastful and the guards all wear sunglasses and every day is just like the next.

A group of prisoners are trying to brighten things up on the chain gang by using some experimental formaldehyde to get high.  I’m sure that won’t lead to any complications!  When the prisoners later try to escape from the prison camp, they’re quickly captured by the guards who proceed to violate all sorts of laws by gunning the prisoners down and then ordering the other prisoners to bury the dead bodies in the prison camp’s garden.

That night, the dead prisoners come back to life as zombies.  Does this happen because they were getting high off of the formaldehyde or is it because the chemicals themselves were leaked into the garden?  The film doesn’t make it particularly clear but it doesn’t matter.  What’s important is that they’re now zombies.  You really don’t need a whole lot of explanations when it comes to zombies.  The dead prisoners are still obsessed with getting high and they start to kill everyone in the camp as a part of their effort to get their precious formaldehyde.

I’ll just admit right now that I absolutely love Garden of the Dead.  Some of that is because Garden of the Dead is a very short movie, clocking in at barely an hour’s running time.  It was a film that was obviously designed to be the second half of a double feature but no matter!  That short running time means that there’s no need for extra padding and the action move quickly.  The film ends before the viewer gets bored with the somewhat repetitive zombie action.  Seriously, we need to normalize 50 minute films.

Another thing that I love about Garden of the Dead is that it is full of foggy bayou atmosphere.  The film itself was obviously shot on a very low budget and on very cheap film but the grainy images actually contribute to the film’s nightmarish feeling.  The film captures the feeling of being isolated in the middle of nowhere.  One reason why the zombies in this film are frightening is because there’s literally nowhere safe to hide from them.  Even if you can get out of the prison camp, you’ll still have to brave the wilderness that surrounds it.

Finally, I liked that the zombies in Garden of the Dead were smarter than the average zombies.  Instead of just stumbling around and trying to eat every living thing that they met, these zombies worked together to get what they wanted.  I especially liked the spazzy zombie who was always running around the prison camp and jumping and yelling at everyone.  These are zombies who clearly enjoy being zombies and it makes Garden of the Dead all the more effective.

Garden of the Dead is a grindhouse gem!
