Music Video of the Day: We Don’t Talk Anymore by Cliff Richard (1979, directed by Brian Grant)
Though he had his occasional hits, Cliff Richard has never made a huge impact in the States. However, in the UK, Cliff Richard is practically an institution. He’s been performing for 60 years straight and has had 14 number one singles in the UK. He’s also the only singer to have had a number one single in five consecutive decades. Before there was the Beatles, there was Cliff Richard.
We Don’t Talk Anymore was Richard’s biggest worldwide hit and it was released during one of his brief periods of American popularity. The video is simple as most music videos were back in the day. Today, music videos are usually mini-movies but, back in the 70s and 80s, they were often just performance clips. This video was the sixth to be played on MTV, airing in between Ph.D’s Little Suzi’s On The Up and The Pretenders’s Brass In Pocket.
As for Cliff Richard, he’s Sir Cliff and he’s still performing. Every December brings a new Christmas song from Sir Cliff Richard.
Enjoy!
End of the Trail: James Stewart in Anthony Mann’s THE MAN FROM LARAMIE (Columbia 1955)
I’ve covered several of the Anthony Mann/James Stewart Western collaborations here. Their final sagebrush outing together THE MAN FROM LARAMIE was shot in Cinemascope and gorgeous Technicolor, features a bunch of solid character actors, has beautiful New Mexico scenery… yet felt like a letdown to me. Maybe it’s because Mann and Stewart set the bar so high in their previous Westerns, but THE MAN FROM LARAMIE is an anti-climactic climax to the director/star duo’s pairings.

Stewart’s good as always, playing bitter Will Lockhart, whose brother was killed by Apaches and whose mission is to find out who’s selling the guns to them. But the film came off flat, feeling like just another routine Western – good, but not in the same category as WINCHESTER ’73 or BEND OF THE RIVER. Those Mann film noir touches are nowhere to be found, replaced by (dare I say it!)… soap opera elements!

Music Video Of The Day: Go Away by Go Betty Go (2008, dir by ????)
No, don’t go away! It’s just a song and we here at the Shattered Lens love all of you.
If the Bowman sisters ever formed a band, we’d probably sound a lot like Go Betty Go.
Enjoy!
4 Shots From 4 Films: Rest in Peace, David Hedison
4 Shots From 4 Films is just what it says it is, 4 shots from 4 of our favorite films. As opposed to the reviews and recaps we usually post, 4 Shots From 4 Films lets the visuals do the talking. David Hedison (1927-2019) was a working actor for over 70 years, starring on stage, screen, and TV. Though he played in virtually every genre, Hedison is perhaps best known for his work in some classic science-fiction, as well as portraying CIA agent Felix Leiter in two James Bond films. Word as hit the internet he passed away July 18 at the age of 93, and in his honor, we present 4 Shots from the Films of David Hedison. Job well done, sir!

The Fly (1958, D: Kurt Neumann)

The Lost World (1960, D: Irwin Allen)

The Cat Creature (TV-Movie 1973, D: Curtis Harrington)

Live and Let Die (1973. D: Guy Hamilton)
And for good measure, here’s David Hedison as Commander Crane in the sci-fi TV series VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA (1964-68)

RIP David Hedison (1927-2019)
The Spectacular Adventures of G-8 And His Battle Aces
G-8 was a heroic aviator and spy during World War I. For 11 years, from 1933 to 1944, G-8 starred in his pulp magazine, G-8 And His Battle Aces. Because G-8 was an aviator, he had several adventures like this:
However, the majority of G-8’s adventures were more like this one:
G-8’s adventures were outlandish even by the standards of the pulp era. Below are the covers for some of his most spectacular adventures. Though I’m not a 100% sure, I think all of these covers can be credited to Frederick Blakeslee.
