Artist Profile: Tom Dunn (1922 — 2004)

Tom Dunn was a prolific paperback cover illustrator but I couldn’t find much biographical information on him.  I did learn that Dunn served with the Marines during World War II and became a commercial illustrator after returning home from the war.

Fortunately, Dunn’s work can speak for itself:

  2. When I was 19 Mr.Dunn took a few Polaroid shots of me in his studio on East Rd. in Belford, New Jersey. At the time I was home from college and his wife wanted me to stand as a Confirmation sponsor for their son. The photos he took he used to paint TIME magazine’s cover for Jan. 6, 1967’s Man of the Year, Americans under 25. It was the first mention of the baby boomer generation. He and his wife were lovely people. He was a handsome dad-type and she was a good looking redhead. They lived at the south-west corner off East Rd. and Leonardville Rd. in a lite brown Cape with his studio, a free standing. building, off to the left and standing in the woods. I remember him smoking a pipe. Nice guy.
