Could this film be the one that nets Idris Elba his first Oscar nomination? And, considering that it will be premiering on Netflix at the same time it gets its limited theatrical release, will Beasts of No Nation change the way the films are distributed? We shall see!
Beasts of No Nation will be released on October 16th.
In case you were wondering what the first YA adaptation of 2016 would be, apparently it’s going to be The Fifth Wave. It features Chloe Grace Moretz fighting aliens and it’s due to be released on January 15th, 2016!
Here’s the trailer for The Danish Girl, a film that everyone is expecting to be a major Oscar contender.
They’re saying that Eddie Redmayne might be the first actor since Tom Hanks to win two consecutive awards for best actor.
(By they, of course, I mean my next door neighbor and the cashier who took my money at Victoria’s Secret this weekend. Seriously, they are Oscar crazy!)
Plus, Alicia Vikander is in it. She’s in like a 100 films this year. (You may have seen her in Ex Machina and if you didn’t, you missed a great film.) She will definitely be nominated for something. It’s just a question of what. If The Danish Girl is a big Oscar contender, it could very will be the film that gets her a nomination.
Hey, did anyone else ever do high school theater and get violently admonished for loudly yelling “MacBeth!” while wandering around backstage in her underwear? Or was that just me?
Anyway, here’s the first U.S. trailer for the upcoming Shakespeare adaptation, MacBeth! This version stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard and, judging from the trailer, it certainly looks dark and gloomy.
It’s been a great couple years when it comes to what the snooty cinephiles would consider as horror in cinema. Sure, we still get the slashers, zombies, found footage paranormals and even the odd cannibal exploitation, but of late we’ve also been getting some great atmospheric and truly disturbing horror of the gothic kind.
The last couple years alone we’ve gotten such great horror films as It Follows, Babadook, The Conjuring, We Are What We Are and The Sacrament to name a few. We have a film straight out of Sundance that looks to join this list.
The Witch is the first film for writer/director Robert Eggers. Working off of his own script, Eggers’ film won him the Directing Award in the Drama Category during Sundance. With critics at the festival lauding the film, The Witch was soon picked up by A24 Films for a theatrical distribution.
Carol, which is based on a Patricia Highsmith novel and stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, was widely acclaimed at Cannes and it’s expected to be a major Oscar contender.
(Yes, that’s right — Rooney might finally get an Oscar nomination that she actually deserves, as opposed to the nomination she got for David Fincher’s insulting bastardization of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.)
This teaser looks pretty good. The only thing that concerns me is that director Todd Haynes may have be acclaimed by some critics but I’m Not There was a mess that featured a handful of good scenes and a general sense of incoherent pretension. And his version of Mildred Pierce was a total travesty, which was mostly rewarded for what it should have been as opposed to what it actually was.
So, Carol could be brilliant. Or it could be totally overrated. I look forward to finding out!
Netflix has had some recent success with creating their own content with such critically-acclaimed shows such as House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black and, most recently, with Daredevil. As their success continue they’ve now begun to create their own content in the full feature-length film area.
One such film is the adaptation of the 2005 novel Beasts of No Nation by Uzodinma Iweala. It’s about the story of the young boy, Agu, who is forced to join a rebel group in some unnamed West African nation to become a child soldier. The book, and the film, will allow us to witness his journey from innocent child to a young child-soldier who sees and participates in wartime atrocities.
Beasts of No Nation stars young actor Abraham Attah in the role of Agu with Idris Elba taking on the role of the sadistic and manipulative Commandant. It also marks the follow-up project for Cary Joji Fukunaga whose most recent work was the first season of a little series on HBO called True Detective.
Beasts of No Nation premieres simultaneously on Netflix and a limited amount of small and independent theaters on October 16, 2015.
Here’s the trailer for Let Me Make You A Martyr, an upcoming crime film that has been getting a lot of attention because it features Marilyn Manson as a hit man.
I’m not sure how I feel about this trailer. I like the visual atmosphere and it’s look like the film uses Manson to good effect. At the same time, that droning voice over gets on my nerves.
I’ll be looking forward to discovering whether Let Me Make You A Martyr is another Cold In July or another Paperboy.
So, what does everyone think of the trailer for Goodnight, Mommy? For the past few months, people have been hyping this movie as one of the scariest movies ever made. The trailer certainly has its moments, nicely mixing obvious scares with moments of deep unease and ominous atmosphere. This is one movie that I will definitely be seeing as soon as it opens in theaters.
Here’s the latest promo for AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead! It doesn’t really tell us much about the show but it’s always fun to watch bad things happen to Los Angeles.
