Today would have been the 101st birthday of the pioneering indie director, Edward D. Wood, Jr!
Today’s song of the day is the theme from Tim Burton’s 1994 biopic of the director. In my opinion, this remains Burton’s first film. Burton also directed the musical video below while the great Toni Basil choreographed. And, best of all, the dancer is named Lisa Marie!
For today’s horror song of the day, we have Demon, a track from the soundtrack for the 1985 film, Demons. This song was composed and performed by Claudio Simonetti, who is best known as the keyboardist of Goblin.
The music video, incidentally, was directed by Michele Soavi, who also appeared in Demons as the mysterious masked man handing out free movie tickets.
The Whispers were first formed 1964 but they had to wait 16 years before scoring the first top 20 hit in both the U.S. and the UK with And The Beat Goes On. This song was co-written by Leon F. Sylvers III, Stephen Shockley, and William Shelby. Sylvers felt that the song had little potential to be a hit. The Whisperers felt differently and they turned out to be correct. This song was both a hit and it lived on as a part of the Vice City soundtrack.
As befits an old school song, this is an old school video, a simple performance clip of the band doing what they did best.
Animal is a song that took three years for Def Leppard to complete. The band started work on the song in 1984 with producer Jim Steinman, who is best known for his collaborations with musicians like Meat Loaf and Bonnie Tyler. Steinman’s orchestral style proved to be a poor fit with Def Leppard’s more straight forward sound. After realizing that Steinman wasn’t going to work out, the band brought in Mutt Lange, who was able to get the sound that the band wanted.
Though the band had already found success in the United States, Animal was the first Def Leppard song to became a hit in the UK. Not only did it reach No. 6 on the UK Single Chart but it also scored the band their first invitation to perform on Top of the Pops. (For the benefit of our American readers, that was, back in the day, a big effing deal.)
The video finds the band working and performing in a traveling circus. The video was directed by Doug Freel and Jean Pellerin, both of whom have directed videos for several different artists. Along with directing several other videos for Def Leppard, Freel and Pellerin have also worked with Metallica. On his own, Freel has done videos for Roxette and Faith No More. Pellerin, meanwhile, directed the films, Laserhawk, For Hire, Daybreak, and The Clown At Midnight.
Have you ever noticed how people always seem to get lost in the desert? I mean, it’s rare that you ever see a music video about someone getting lost because they missed their exit on Central Expressway. The lesson here is to stay as far away from the desert as possible. You’re safer in a tropical rain forest.
