Also according to Keith, Doom and Gloom was one of the quickest recordings that the Rolling Stones ever did. It only took three takes to lay down the track. Richards credits that to the chemistry that the Stones have when they’re playing together. As Keith puts it, the only problem when it comes to recording a new Rolling Stones song is finding a time when everyone can actually get together.
As for the video, it was filmed in a warehouse in Paris and it was directed by Jonas Akerlund, a prolific video director who is best-known for his work with Madonna. The video stars Noomi Rapace, the Swedish actress who starred in the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy and who later appeared in Prometheus.
One thing about the Stones: they don’t quit. The band has existed for nearly six decades and they’re still making music that demands to be played loud.
The lesson of this video is don’t try to bury Messiah Marcolin.
Marcolin was the lead singer of the Swedish doom metal band, Candlemass. In this video, for their song Bewitched, Messiah Marcolin not only comes back to life and rises from his own coffin but he uses his powers of awesome singing to create an army of brainwashed zombies. This would be scary, except for the fact that Messiah Marcolin spends most of the video looking like this:

He does somehow manage to entrance a cute girl about halfway through the video.
I guess that’s the power of Swedish doom metal.
This video, which has been called one of the most enjoyably bad metal video of all time, is significant for being the first video to have been directed by Jonas Akerlund. From working with Candlemass, Akerlund has gone on to direct videos for everyone from U2 to Jane’s Addiction to Beyonce to The Rolling Stones to almost everyone else who has ever had a ht song.
As for Candlemass, they’ve disbanded and gotten back together a few times. In January 2013, Candlemass was voted the greatest Swedish hard rock/metal band of all time by the writers of Sweden Rock Magazine.

Ironically, when Moby first recorded Porcelain, he felt that it was such a weak song that he didn’t even want to release it. According to an interview that he gave to Billboard, the song was inspired by a real-life relationship, one that did not end well. Perhaps the subject matter was too personal for him to hear the song objectively but Moby had to literally be talked into including Porcelain on Play.
Of course, it went on to become one of his signature songs, perhaps the song for which he will always be remembered.
How many movies and advertisements have featured Porcelain? I’ve lost track. Danny Boyle made good use of it in The Beach. I remember I once even heard it playing in the background of a commercial for a local jewelry store.
As for the video, it’s simple but effective. It was directed by Swedish director Jonas Åkerlund, who directed his first video in 1988 and is still directing them today.
Through good times and bad I have always been a huge fan and follower of Metallica. Even as they foolishly went off track following the path Bob Rock set for them throughout most of the 1990’s through the disastrous St. Anger debacle as they tried to return to their earlier sound, I have always followed this band which made up the original Big 4 of thrash metal (Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth).
It was on their 1998 cover album, Garage Inc., that the band released one of their most popular songs. It wasn’t an original, but a cover of the classic Bob Seger hard rock song about the hard road and life of a musician. Seger’s “Turn the Page” is just one of those hard rock tunes that latches onto the listener and forces them to listen and understand. Most such songs tend to be quite pretentious with nothing much to say once the listener really pays attention. The same cannot be said about Seger’s song.
Metallica decided to cover this song for their Garage Inc. album which was all about them covering their own favorite hard rock and metal songs of the past. While Metallica kept the original’s tempo, they added their own heavier and harder edge to song that straddles the line between hard rock and heavy metal. Even James Hetfield’s alcohol and cigarette ravaged vocals lent a sense of the hard road and life the track sings about.
The biggest change from the Seger song to Metallica’s cover has to be the accompanying music video which still remains one of the most controversial in MTV’s music video history (well, when they still played music videos). Seger’s song was released in 1973 when the concept of music video was nonexistent. With Metallica’s cover it was almost a guarantee that it would get a music video and what a video it was and still is.
The video was directed by Jonas Akerlund who had made a name for himself directing some of the most creative and innovative music videos of the day. His take on the song switches from a musician’s hard road and life on the road to that of a single mother trying to make ends meet as an erotic dancer by day and a prostitute by night to provide for her young daughter. The video was banned from receiving any sort of airplay on MTV as it dealt and showed the disturbing side of such a life. The fact that the tamer version of the video (below) still couldn’t make it on the airwaves just showed how much more haunting and controversial the uncensored version turned out to be.

The latest song of the day is one of the best example of 1970’s classic rock. It’s “Turn the Page” by Bob Seger and was originally released in 1973 as part of Seger’s rock album, Back in ’72.
The song really didn’t enjoy very early success once it was released. It wasn’t until he performed the song live for his 1976 live album, Live Bullet. His performance of the song for that live recording and future live performances at concerts made it a favorite for classic rock stations which continues to give the song consistent radio airplay. Seger’s performance has been called a mixture of mournful and soul-shattering as he sang about the hard and difficult life of the on-the-road musician. It has been quite the influential song for other musicians down the years.
Metallica even covered the song for their 1998 cover album, Garage Inc. It is this Metallica cover of Seger’s song which introduced me to it. The Metallica cover pretty much stays along the same pacing and keep the lyrics intact, but giving the whole production a decidedly heavy metal tone.
