October Positivity: Revelation Road 3: The Black Rider (dir by Gabriel Sabloff)


Eric Roberts is not in Revelation Road 3.

I was hoping that he might be, even though his name didn’t appear in the credits.  Quite a few cast members from the first two films return for the third film.  David A.R. White is back as Josh McManus, the former super soldier who now drives his souped-car through the wastelands of America.  Bruce Marchiano is back, credited as the Stranger though we all  know he’s actually Jesus.  (Since Marchiano  appeared in all three films, I can only assume the Revelation Road films all take place in the same cinematic universe as The Encounter films and Sarah’s Choice.)  Brian Bosworth shows up briefly.

But there is no Eric Roberts.  Not even Eliza Roberts appears in this film!  It’s a shame and they are both missed.

However, Kevin Sorbo does show up.

Kevin Sorbo plays Honcho, a bandit leader who lives in the wastelands and who is worshipped by those who follow him.  Honcho occasionally speaks with an Australian accent.  Occasionally, the accent slips or disappears all together.  At first, I thought this was a case of bad editing, bad dubbing, or maybe Sorbo not really being that into the character.  However, there’s actually a rather clever moment in which Honcho tells Josh that he’s not actually from Australia.  He just speaks with the accent because it impresses his followers.  Without the accent, he’s just some guy who used to work at a gas station.  With the accent, he’s a warlord.

It’s a moment that made me laugh, largely because it’s true.  People love and fear accents.  If you’ve got a posh British accent, most Americans will assume that you’re planning a heist of some sort and that Sylvester Stallone or Harrison Ford is somewhere nearby, trying to stop you.  If you’ve got an Australian accent, the assumption amongst Americans is that you can survive harsh conditions, handle your alcohol, and jump out of a plane without a second thought.

However, Sorbo’s fake Australian accent also pays a sort of homage to the Mad Max films.  The Revelation Road trilogy was obviously envisioned as being a faith-based version of the Mad Max films, with David A.R. White cheerfully stepping into the somber shoes of Mel Gibson and Tom Hardy.  Using Mad Max as a model for a faith-based apocalypse film actually isn’t that bad of an idea.  Indeed, Gibson’s style of beatific madness opens up the original Mad Max trilogy to a similar interpretation.  Unfortunately, Revelation Road 3 is at time a bit too faithful to the Mad Max films, to the extent that it struggles to establish an identity outside of the films that inspired it.  That’s one reason why Kevin Sorbo’s character stands out.  He’s a character who genuinely surprises us.

As for the plot of Revelation Road 3, it finds Josh being sent on a mission to find The Shepherd (Robert Gossett), a mysterious figure who is gathering together a religious flock in the desert despite the fact that the new world government has outlawed things like religion and individual freedom.  While Josh’s wounded companion waits in a town ruled over by Mayor Drake (James Denton), Josh searches the desert and occasionally sees a mysterious rider on a horse.  The film mixes action and theology and the results are definitely mixed, with a few well-done chase scenes mixed with a lot of scenes of people talking.  That said, at its best, The Black Rider achieves a sort of desolate grandeur.

October Positivity: Meant To Be (dir by Bradley Dorsey)


2012’s Meant To Be tells the story of …. well, it tells a few stories.

Tori (Erin Sossamon) is a teenage girl who has a bright future but only if she can survive her less-than-wonderful present.  She has an abusive boyfriend.  Her parents seem to be absent.  She’s a photographer and her high school counselor (Michael Gross) has helped her to find a scholarship but Tori has recently discovered that she’s pregnant!

Linda Dickson (Erika Eleniak) is a social worker, who lives in a nice house and who has a wonderful husband (Dean Cain) but who also seems to be struggling with an overwhelming depression.  Maybe it’s because her 18 year-old daughter has recently left home for college.  She obsesses on finding newspaper stories about 20 year-olds doing wonderful things.  She cuts them out of the paper and puts them in a shoebox.  (I do the same thing with well-written obituaries.)  When a call comes in about a loud argument at Tori’s house, Linda is the one who investigates.  When she realizes that Tori is pregnant, Linda becomes a part of Tori’s life, giving her advice.  Linda is determined to convince Tori to not get an abortion, even if it means that Tori will lose her scholarship.

And finally, there’s Nathan (Bradley Dorsey), a twenty year-old aspiring writer who doesn’t know what he should write about.  In a voice-over, he says that he’s learned that writing about only what you know can be a trap so he’s decided to write about what he doesn’t know.  (By that logic, my next short story should be about trigonometry.)  Nathan grew up in the foster system.  He doesn’t know who his mother was.  He’s not even fully sure where he was born.  But he’s still going to search for her so he can discover not only where he came from but also why he was abandoned.

Nathan finds himself staying at a mysterious hotel, one where all of the other guests also appear to be people who never knew their mother.  Even though Nathan puts a do-not disturb sign on his door, the motel maid (Della Reese) still regularly enters his room and encourages him to get out of bed and continue his search.  With the help of two other guests, Shelly (Kristen Renton) and Becky (Colleen Foy), Nathan is able to track down his mother and her address….

Can you guess who she is?

Of course, you can!  Now, in all fairness to the movie, it doesn’t present the fact that Linda is Nathan’s mother as some sort of surprise twist.  From the moment that Nathan figures out that his mother was named Linda and then Becky comes across an old glamour shot of Erika Eleniak in a high school yearbook, it’s pretty clear that Linda Dickson gave up Nathan and she’s never stopped thinking about him and that’s why she’s so obsessed with Tori.  That’s not the twist.

But there is a twist and here it is….

Are you ready?

Nathan and all the residents at the hotel and most of the passengers on the flights that Nathan takes in  and out of town are …. ABORTION GHOSTS!  That’s right.  Linda had an abortion.  Nathan was the son she was meant to have but didn’t.

Is it heavy-handed?  Yes.  Is it effective?  Well, the answer to that question probably depends on how you feel about abortion.  That’s one thing about all of these abortion movies.  It’s hard for me to imagine that any of these films — whether it’s the church-produced Pro-Life films or the studio-produced Pro-Choice films — have ever changed anyone’s mind about abortion.  As such, movies about abortion largely exist to preach to the choir.  Abortion movies, regardless of which side they come down on, are largely movie that people watch so that they can nod and think to themselves, “My side really is the only correct one.”

As for the film itself, it’s rather slow and the voice-over tends to get rather portentous.  Dean Cain was probably on the set for one day.  Colleen Foy gave the best performance while Erika Eleniak was a bit bland in the lead role.  On the plus side, it looked like a real movie, which is more than one can say for a lot of faith-based films.  Again, how you react to the film will largely depend on whether or not you agree with its message.

October Positivity: Jerusalem Countdown (dir by Harold Cronk)


2011’s Jerusalem Countdown opens with the world on the verge of destruction.  Israel and a nuclear-armed Iran are negotiating in Washington and not everyone wants the two countries to be at peace.

In Chicago, Daniel (Carey Scott) watches the news of the summit and then looks out his window as his unfriendly and glowering neighbor comes and goes from his house.  Daniel worries that his neighbor is up to something.  He could be a member of a terrorist cell!  Daniel’s wife (Jaci Velasquez) tells him to stop worrying about things that he can’t control but that’s easier said than done.

FBI agent Eve (Anna Zielinski) is approached by her father (Stacy Keach), a former intelligence agent who warns her that the end times are approaching.

Another intelligence agent, Shane Daughtery (David A.R. White) is contacted by a burned-out arms dealer (Lee Majors), who informs him that a group of terrorists are planning on setting off a series of bombs and plunging the world into war.  The arms dealer is assassinated by a man who keeps reciting passages from the Book of Revelations.  Meanwhile, CIA bigwig Jack Thompson (a seriously miscast Randy Travis) continually tells Shane that he can’t share too much information with him because it’s all classified….

Jerusalem Countdown is a faith-based film that also tries to be an action film.  In fact, I would say that far more emphasis is put on action than on faith.  Until the final few minutes of the film, there’s really not much focus put on religion, other than Daniel briefly praying when he finds himself trapped in the neighbor’s house and a scene where a librarian scolds Shane and Eve for not knowing about the Ten Commandments.  One major commandments, by the way, is Thou Shalt Not Kill but Shane and Eve manage to kill quite a few people in this film.  Of course, they were all bad people and Shane and Eve are trying to keep the world from being plunged into a world war so I’m willing to cut them some slack.

The cast, as you may have noticed, has a number of familiar faces in it.  It’s largely a nostalgia cast, the type that’s designed to make people over the age of 60 say, “Lee Majors is in this!”  With the exception of Randy Travis, none of the “stars” have a particularly large role.  One gets the feeling that Stacy Keach filmed his scenes in a handful of hours, collected his paycheck, and then got out of there.  It’s amazing to me that Eric Roberts is somehow not in this film.

As for the film itself, it’s competently made and David A.R. White is one of the better actors amongst the Pureflix regulars.  (White has even managed to maintain a semblance of dignity through five God’s Not Dead films.)  That said, the film itself moves a bit slowly and the low-budget keeps the action from being as memorable as it could be.  There’s a cool helicopter crash but otherwise, it’s never as exciting as it obviously wants to be and there’s a lot — and I do mean A LOT — of filler-type scenes of people talking on their phones while driving from one location to another.  The plot itself feels a bit muddled and there’s a lot of loose ends left dangling, as if the film was meant to be a set up for a sequel that never came.
