INDICTMENT: THE MCMARTIN TRIAL (1995)

Actor James Woods is great at portraying attorneys. Whether it be as the real life Assistant D.A. Bob Tanenbaum in the excellent T.V. Movie BADGE OF THE ASSASSIN (1985), the crusading hippie Eddie Dodd in TRUE BELIEVER (1989) or the namesake of the excellent TV series SHARK (2006-2008), Woods knows how to play that unique combination of intelligence, shrewdness, and sneakiness to perfection. In 1995, he further applied those skills when he portrayed real life attorney Danny Davis in the HBO movie INDICTMENT: THE MCMARTIN TRIAL. This movie is based on the McMartin day care sexual abuse case that began with horrific allegations in 1983 and ended in 1990 with zero convictions and all charges dropped. During that time, the McMartin Trial became the longest and most expensive series of criminal trials in American history. 

I’ll just go ahead and challenge any person to watch INDICTMENT: THE MCMARTIN TRIAL and not get filled with righteous anger about the complete failure of our judicial system. Add to that failure the complete breakdown of our media to cover events in a fair and impartial fashion with even the smallest shred of objectivity. Does any of this sound familiar? As good as James Woods is in the central role, the star of this film is the true story itself. We watch as various people in positions of authority and power act completely out of self interest, including Davis himself at first, with the pursuit of the truth or justice not even the slightest consideration no matter what the evidence suggests. In actuality, the truth was hidden by the prosecution in pursuit of convictions that never came. The shit that this family was put through with coerced evidence that had no chance of standing up to the slightest bit of scrutiny is disgraceful. It’s one of the most infuriating films I’ve ever seen and it’s just as relevant in 2025 as it was in 1995. The performances are spot on, beginning with Woods’ central performance as Danny Davis and moving on to Shirley Knight in a Golden Globe winning portrayal of Peggy McMartin Buckey, Mercedes Ruehl as prosecutor Lael Rubin, Lolita Davidovich as child therapist Kee MacFarlane, Sada Thompson as matriarch Virginia McMartin, and Henry Thomas as the odd but innocent Ray Buckey. Produced by Oliver Stone and directed by Mick Jackson (THE BODYGUARD, VOLCANO), this button pushing, thought provoking film would win both the Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe awards for best Made for Television Movie in 1995. It’s truly an excellent film and should be seen by any person interested in a fair judicial system or unbiased media.

Here’s What Won At The Emmys

I was busy hosting a movie watch party on Monday night so I didn’t watch the Emmys.  It’s probably for the best, as I would have been very upset over the lack of love shown to Barry and Better Call Saul.

(That said, I did like The Bear and I’m happy that Ted Lasso didn’t win.  As for Succession, it’s never done much for me and I usually find the discourse around it to be kind of annoying.  Finally, Beef was a good pick for Best Limited Series, even if it did run on a bit too long.)

A Few Thoughts On The 2023 Emmy Nominations

The Emmy nominations were revealed today.  There’s so many of them that I couldn’t even begin to list them all here on the site but you can view them over at the Emmys’s main site.  While looking over the nominees, I had just a few thoughts.

First off, the Emmys themselves always feel a bit silly.  I think it’s because there’s so many different categories and so many contenders that, inevitably, one feels as if they’ve only seen a few of the actual nominees.  As well, the Emmys tend to fall into the habit of nominating the same programs over and over again, regardless of whether the show or performer actually had a good individual season.  Once a show is nominated two times in a row, it seems destined to be nominated for the rest of its run, even if its subsequent seasons aren’t that interesting.  (Cases in point: Only Murders In The Building and Ted Lasso.)  By that same token, if a show is snubbed during it’s first or second season, it’ll probably never be nominated for anything, regardless of how popular or critically acclaimed it may eventually become.  (Case in point: Yellowstone.)  In other words, don’t take the Emmys seriously.

In the comedy categories, I was really happy to see that both Jury Duty and James Marsden were nominated.  Ted Lasso was nominated because the Academy is addicted to voting for it and not because it had a particularly noteworthy third season.  I was glad to see that Barry was nominated but annoyed to see that neither Sarah Goldberg nor Stephen Root were remembered.  I was glad that Natasha Lyonne was nominated but Poker Face still deserved far more nominations than it received.

In the drama categories, it’s pretty much all Succession.  Succession ended this season and I’m glad that I’ll no longer have to pretend to care about it.  There’s something so liberating about the prospect of never having to read another cutesy interview with Brian Cox or another think piece on why Shiv is the greatest character ever.  I imagine Succession will sweep the Emmys, which is a bit unfortunate as this year will always be Better Call Saul‘s last chance to be honored.  Hopefully, Bob Odenkirk will finally win an Emmy for Better Call Saul.  I’m glad that Andor was nominated but I’m disappointed that Diego Luna was not.

In the limited anthology series category, it’s hard not to be a bit annoyed that the Academy went for Ryan Murphy’s overlong and rather pointless miniseries about Jeffrey Dahmer while completely snubbing National Geographic’s A Small Light.  At this point, I guess the Academy feels obligated to honor anything that Ryan Murphy forces on them.  I was also disappointed that The English failed to pick up any major nominations, not even for the great Emily Blunt.  The Emmy win that would make me happiest would be for Ray Liotta to win for Black Bird.  

In the movie category, Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe was not nominated but …. well, I kind of knew that it wouldn’t be.  It was hilarious but, unfortunately, it’s not the type of thing that wins awards.

Traitors should have been nominated for Best Reality Competition.

South Park‘s “Worldwide Privacy Tour” was not nominated for Best Animated Program.  That’s just ridiculous.  The Television Academy wimped out as far as that’s concerned.

Anyway, it’s the Emmys.  In the end, no one really cares that much.

What If Lisa Marie Had All The Power: 2023 Emmys Edition

The Emmy Nominations are due to be announced tomorrow so it’s time for the Shattered Lens to play a game that should be familiar to our longtime readers, What If Lisa Marie Had All The Power.

Below, you’ll find my personal Emmy nominations.  Keep in mind, these are not necessarily the shows and performers who I think will be nominated, though a few definitely will be.  Instead, these are my personal picks.  This is what would be nominated if I had all the power.

Now, there’s a lot of Emmy categories.  I went through the Emmy submissions and I picked nominees for every single category.  However, in the interest of space, I can’t list all of them in this post.  Instead, below, you’ll find my picks for the major categories.  If you want to see the complete list of my nominees, you can see it by clicking here!

Looking over my full list of nominees, you’ll see that there are some shows that I really, really liked.  Those shows include A Small Light, Poker Face, The English, Andor, The Traitors, Abbott Elementary, Ghosts, Making the Cut, Wednesday, Better Call Saul, Barry, The Bear, Bob’s Burgers, South Park, Beef, Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe, Black Bird, Atlanta, Five Days At Memorial, Daisy Jones and the Six, Prey, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, The Amazing Race, and The Last Thing He Told Me.  Interestingly enough, a lot of my favorite shows aired their final season over the past year.  I look forward to seeing what replaces Barry and Better Call Saul in my annual Emmy line-ups.

Here Are The 2022 Winners of the Critics Choice Awards!

The Critics Choice Awards were handed out tonight.  The show aired on the CW and it was hosted by Chelsea Handler, so I’m sure it was a classy affair.  I wouldn’t know for sure because I didn’t watch them but seriously, when has the CW been anything other than classy?

(Dear CW: DAMN YOU FOR CANCELING DYNASTY!)

Anyway, here are the winners.  It’s pretty much everyone you would expect to see.  The Critics Choice Awards are not known for their upsets.  At this point, I think everyone’s used to Everything Everywhere All At Once winning the critical accolades.  I’ll be more curious to see if the Guilds follow suit.

2022 Emmy Nomination Thoughts

The Emmy nominations were announced this morning.  As usual, I agree with a few of the nominations and disagreed with the majority of them.  I was happy to see Abbott Elementary nominated for Best Comedy.  I was happy that Barry got a lot of love.  You can see all the nominees over at Emmys.com.

For the most part, I think my personal nominations were better.

For Best Comedy Series, I was happy to see Abbott Elementary, Barry, Only Murders In The Building, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and What We Do In The Shadows nominated.  I was not happy to see that Cobra Kai, Ghosts, and The Flight Attendant were pretty much shut out of the major categories, with the exception of Kaley Cuoco’s nomination for Best Actress.  Though I’m not a huge fan of Ted Lasso, I realize that others are and I don’t think it’s bad show as much as it’s just not for me.  Hacks, I am going to guess, was nominated because it was about show business.  Curb Your Enthusiasm was nominated out-of-habit, as this latest season was pretty much unwatchable.  I’m disappointed Atlanta wasn’t nominated but, to be honest, I kind of suspected that this season would be too surreal for the voters.  Donald Glover was nominated for Best Actor but how did Atlanta not land even a single writing nomination?

For Drama Series, I actually agree with 6 of the 8 nominees, Better Call Saul, Euphoria, Severance, Squid Game, and Yellowjackets.  I will be rooting for Yellowjackets, though we all know that Succession is going to win again.  Succession pretty much dominated the acting nominations as well.  I’ll be cheering for Severance’s Adam Scott and Christopher Walken and Yellowjackets’s Melanie Lynesky and Christina Ricci.  That said, I’m fully expecting Succession to sweep.  Maybe Bob Odenkirk will finally get some Emmy love and spare us from a self-congratulatory Brian Cox acceptance speech.  That would be nice.

Best Limited Series, I don’t even want to talk about.  I agree with one nominee, The Dropout.  My other favorite miniseries — shows like Maid, Pistol, Candy, The Offer, Angelyne, 1883, Dr. Death — were shut out for stuff like Inventing Anna and Pam & Tommy.  I imagine that Dopesick will sweep this category, despite not being that interesting of a show.  Narratively, Dopesick was a mess but it had four good performances (Michael Keaton, Kaitlyn Dever, Peter Sarsgaard, and Will Poulter) and a villain that was easy to dislike.

As far as Best TV Movie goes, I imagine that The Survivor will win and I’m happy with that.  I would have liked to have seen a nomination or two for I Want You Back and The House but The Survivor is an important film and, at a time when anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial is being normalized, it’s a film that deserves more attention.  With a growing number of celebrities and influencers recently displaying their ignorance of what happened in Nazi Germany and often being openly anti-Semitic without any apparent consequences, it’s easy to see why it’s important to honor films like The Survivor.

The Amazing Race was nominated for Best Competition Show.  I was happy about that.

When I started off this post, I was upset about the Emmys snubbing some of my favorite shows but, as I’ve sat here typing, I’ve calmed down.  It’s just the Emmys and don’t know anyone who really takes them seriously.  The winners will be announced on September 12th.
