Yes, I am aware of some of Rick Derringer’s recent exploits–in real life and on Wikipedia (article | talk page | edit history). I didn’t know about them until I started looking into this video. If I were to take that kind of thing into account on every video I spotlighted, then I would be unable to do these posts at all.
That being said, I would be fascinated to find out how Derringer supposedly carries a gun on a plane 30-50 times a year. That sounds like Kevin Mitnick territory, where he should help the airlines to close up the gaps in their security that allowed that to happen.
The only reason I even came across this stuff was because I was trying to confirm something that a bunch a people have been trying to figure out about this video:
Who is the girl?
There seems to be two theories:
- It’s Derringer’s wife. That seems to have been dismissed as a myth.
- It’s Liz Brewer. This appears to be the most reputable theory. She did hang out with rockers, including Jimi Hendrix, back in the day. Today she writes about etiquette.
As for the date, I came up with 1975 based on two things:
- It’s in color. I know this doesn’t automatically rule out the 60s, but it was a good indicator that this wasn’t done for The McCoys original 1965 release.
- The song was re-released in 1975 on a best-of-Rick Derringer album.
Enjoy the song and video. And unless you have to, don’t go don’t the Wikipedia-talk-pages rathole.

Definitely 70’s era. The original song doesn’t feature a xylophone, so it must be Derringer’s re-recording. And the dancing braless girl just SCREAMS 70’s!!

Definitely the 1970’s just before the Disco era. It’s in color and the McCoys hair is much longer. I saw the Kingsmen and the McCoys in 1966. I think Derringer is a year older than I (1949 vs 1950 me). He has a 1971 shag haircut. The McCoys hair was much shorter then. I was in California recently and was stunned to see how overweight the population is now! I can still wear my Army fatigues from 1969.

Turns out Liz Agriss was Rick’s wifes maiden name. Liz Brewer is out of the picture altogether. No more credit for work she didn’t do!

The dancer in the Hang On Sloopy Video is Lisa Leonard Dalton.
Liz Brewer was never married to Rick Derringer. Liz Agriss married Rick Derringer but was not the dancer in the video. Rick did not know the dancer.
The video was made for the 1975 remake of Hang On Sloopy by Rick Derringer as a solo artist.
The most popular version of the song was in 1965 by The McCoys with Rick Derringer lead singer.

Not Liz Derringer, the wife, nor Liz Brewer the Brit. Dancer was LA club dance champ for 1974 Lisa Leonard Dalton. This was reported in 2021 and verified by Rick Derringer on his facebook in Nov. 2022. Dalton has her own Sloopy Girl youtube channel. The whole story is here:
