When I saw the headline for this article, I mistakenly assumed that it referred to the film Pearl Harbor, so I came here expecting a few laughs at Ben Affleck’s expense. Seeing the photo of the list of names of the 1,100+ sailors and Marines who died and are still entombed on the USS Arizona quickly changed the mood. Reading a number totaling the dead is one thing. Seeing the long list of the individual names of those who died, not even knowing they were at war, or even at imminent risk, is another thing entirely.

I took this picture in the summer of 2003, while on vacation in Hawaii. The long list of names (and the one man standing in front of the wall) made a huge impression, which has stayed with me ever since.
