Scenes That I Love: “That’s Bird Seed!” from The Oscar
Have you ever wondered what it takes to win an Oscar? The 1966 film, The Oscar, revealed to audiences just how sleazy a world Hollywood can be. Frankie Fane (Stephen Boyd) does everything he can to win an Oscar and he doesn’t care who he hurts! But fear not — Hollywood may not be perfect but it has no room for someone like Frankie Fane! At the end of the movie, a man named Frank does win the Oscar but his last name is Sinatra and Frankie Fane is left humiliated. That’ll teach him to try to pull one over on the Academy!
The Oscar is an incredibly silly film but it’s also a lot of fun. In this scene that I love, Frankie’s best friend — played by Tony Bennett, in both his first and final film — confronts Frankie about the type of star that he’s become.

Here they are! The 2024 Oscar nominations!
There’s a few surprises, like I’m Still Here getting nominated for Best Picture. I will say that if Kamala Harris had won in November, Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong would not have been nominated for The Apprentice. The same impulse that causes the Academy to honor the films of Adam McKay is responsible for the nominations of Stan and Strong. Pamela Anderson getting a nomination for The Last Showgirl would have made for a great story but it didn’t happen.
After all the hype, the actual announcement of the nominations is always a bit of a let down.

Lisa Marie’s Final 2024 Oscar Predictions
The Oscar nominations are due to be announced tomorrow so I guess I should post my final predictions. 2024 has been a rough year for me and my sisters. Our Dad was in a car accident in May and, after two months of physical rehab, passed away in August while in home hospice care. Needless to say, going to the movies was the last thing on my mind for much of 2024.
(I’m very thankful that my fellow contributors who kept the site going during our frequent absences. Their hard work not only kept TSL alive but it also rekindled my own passion for the Shattered Lens. I am still very much in mourning but writing for this site and sharing my thoughts with our readers has definitely helped me to regain some semblance of stability.)
So, there’s a lot of Oscar hopefuls that I have not seen. That’s one reason why I haven’t done a best of 2024 list this year or my usual “If Lisa Marie Had All The Power” posts because there’s still a lot that I need to watch. (I may publish them at some point in February, by which point everyone will have moved on but it will make me feel happy.) I’m flying blind here with a lot of the potential nominees. But I’ve been following the guilds and the critic awards and I feel reasonably confident about the predictions below.
Tomorrow morning, we’ll find out how right or wrong I am.

Here Are The 2024 DGA Nominations
The Director Guild has announced its nominees for the best of 2024. This is one of strongest of the precursors so A Complete Unknown getting mentioned both by the DGA and the SAG would seem to indicate that it’s going to get a Best Picture nod as well. We’ll find out next week!

Here Are The 2025 SAG Nominations
Due to the catastrophic wildfires currently burning in California, Tte Screen Actors Guild dispensed with their usual big nominations announcement and instead sent out a simple press release their morning.
Here are the SAG’s film nominations. The SAG is a usually pretty good precursor so the folks who were celebrating the victory of the Brutalist on Sunday night have a bit less to celebrate today. That said, the 2,0000-person nominating committee appear to have really liked The Last Showgirl. Let’s keep Pamela Anderson’s Oscar hopes alive!

Some thoughts on the Golden Globes
Tonight, I covered the Golden Globe Awards for the Lens via Twitter/X. The full list of winners can be found here.
It was an interesting setup, with comedian Nikki Glazer hosting. She didn’t take up too much time on stage, and I like to think that save for the opening monologue, she kept things moving.
Not all of the jokes hit. There were some embarrassing moments with Harrison Ford and Anthony Mackie. While both Awkwfina and Melissa McCarthy (who looked great for the evening) were good, I kind of wanted things to move on a little quicker.
The Brutalist was the Best Picture winner of the evening. The film also won Best Actor (Adrian Brody) and and Best Director in Brady Corbet. This may give the film an interesting chance come Oscar-time. The film beat out high Drama features such as Edward Berger’s Conclave (which managed to pull the Best Screenplay), Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Part Two and James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown.
Jon M. Chu’s Wicked, which some felt was the front runner for the Musical/Comedy was somewhat eclipsed by France’s Emilia Perez, which took home Golden Globes for Zoe Saldana, Best Non-English Film and Best Picture (Musical or Comedy). Wicked did manage to win the newly minted Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award.
Bringing in Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley as presenters for Best Male Actor in a Series was cool to see, watching them play off their pairing in The Substance. Demi’s win for Best Actress was a major highlight for the evening. She, along with Zoe Saldana and Colin Farrell (for HBO’s The Penguin) had some of the best speeches during the show. Colin thanked everyone under the sun, including Craft Services. Also loved the Best Picture (Non-English) winners for Emilia Perez. Colin Farrell thanked everyone from Cristina Milioti to Craft Services. Kieran Culkan beat out his Succession co-star Jeremy Strong for Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, adding to the notion that Roman might have been the best of the Roys (if not Shiv). It was also great to see Sebastian Stan win for A Different Man. That was a long time coming as I’ve been a fan of his since The Covenant.
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross won Best Score for Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers. I thought that The Wild Robot would take the Best Animated Film category, but Flow won that, and it honestly looks like a wonderful film.
In TV, it was all about Hacks and Shogun. Both shows dominated the awards with wins for Jane Smart (Hacks), Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada and Tadanobu Asano (for Shogun). I was particularly happy with Asano’s win, who I thought should have also won an Emmy.
