Song of the Day: Something (The Beatles)


Ok, time to get back in the saddle.

The latest entry in the “Greatest Guitar Solos Series” comes courtesy of The Beatles and one of the best songs, if not the best one, from their 1969 album, Abbey Road.

The song is the George Harrison penned “Something” and its been acknowledged by musicians and critics to be the greatest love song that doesn’t have the mention the word love (on a serious note, it is the greatest love song).

The guitar solo is performed by George Harrison and arrives as part of the song’s outro.

Song of the Day: While My Guitar Gently Weeps (by The Beatles)


Continuing our series of greatest guitar solo series, I present “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” by The Beatles.

The song was written by George Harrison and was composed at a time after the band had just returned from a trip and stay in India to study Transcendental Meditation. Harrison, inspired by his stay in India, re-discovered his passion for the guitar and began to write songs with it as his main instrument. Thus begins an era of The Beatles and George Harrison as a maturing songwriter than made a huge contribution to the band becoming more than just the global rock phenomena pre-1968 and one where the group began to release songs and albums that reflected their new world views.

Yet, as great as the song has become since its release on November 22, 1968, it’s also well-remembered as the song that began a series of collaborations between George Harrison and Eric Clapton (a close friend) who plays lead guitar on the song. It is Clapton’s lead guitar work on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that has mesmerized listeners throughout the decades.

Clapton plays two guitar solos, the first occurring during first bridge section of the song, and the second the song’s outro. Both solos accentuates and focuses on the song’s lyrical tradition styling where the musical instrument provides the emotions that propel the song.

The outro guitar solo has also reached a new level of immortality in 2004 when Harrison was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The collaboration of artists that included Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Marc Mann, Dhani Harrison, Prince, Steve Ferrone, Scott Thurston, Jeff Young, and Jim Capaldi. It was Prince’s extended performance of the outro solo that’s become legendary.

Musical Film Review: Let It Be (dir by Michael Lindsay-Hogg)


Hey, it’s the Beatles!

The 1970 documentary Let It Be, which is now streaming on Disney+ after being impossible to see for decades, follows the Beatles as they record music, occasionally argue, occasionally laugh, collaborate on songs, and ultimately play the famous rooftop concert that was eventually ended by the London police.  Paul McCartney smiles and laughs and jokes but he also obsesses over every little musical detail and often seems to be talking in order to keep anyone else from getting a cross word in.  John Lennon dances with Yoko Ono and occasionally smiles but often seems like his mind is elsewhere.  George Harrison smiles whenever he know that the camera is on him but, when glimpsed in the background, he doesn’t seem happy at all.  Ringo patiently waits for his chance to perform, sometimes bored and sometimes amused but always the most likable of the bunch.  He and George work on Octopus Garden and it’s a charming moment, if just because it’s obvious that both men would rather be there than in the studio.

Even if you haven’t seen Peter Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back (which was constructed out of material that was shot for but not used in this documentary), Let It Be is often time one of the most depressing behind-the-scenes documentaries ever made.  The more the individual members of the Beatles smile and perform for the camera, the more one can see the cracks that have formed in their relationships.  With Lennon spending most of his time with Yoko, it’s Paul who dominates the documentary.  Paul comes across as being charming and talented but his habit of nonstop talking gives the impression of someone who is desperately trying to hold together a sinking ship.  At one point, George snaps that he’ll play the guitar however Paul tells him to and it’s obvious that, for George and probably the others as well, being the world’s most popular band has gone from being a thrill to just being another job.  When Paul and John talk about how much fun they had when they first started playing live in  Hamburg, it’s obvious that the conversation is at least partially staged to set up the rooftop concert but there’s a genuine sadness to their voices.  Even as they write and record new songs, they’re realizing that all things must pass.

But then the Beatles give a rooftop concert and they bring London to a halt and, for a few minutes, it seems like everything is going to be alright.  Standing on the roof and performing a wonderful version of Get Back, the Beatles are suddenly a band just having fun and it’s delightful to see.  Later, John Lennon gets a devilish gleam in his eyes as he sings the raunchy (for 1969) lyrics for I’ve Got A Feeling.  Even George looks happy for a few moments.  People gather in the street below to watch and the camera is quick to show us that both young and old love the Beatles.  Of course, eventually, the police show up and shut down the show.  (Of course, being British police, they’re very polite about it.  One has to breathe a sigh of relief that the Beatles didn’t try to do their rooftop show in New York or Los Angeles.)  It’s a reminder that nothing lasts forever.  Eventually, every concert comes to an end.

It’s interesting to compare Let It Be to another 70s documentary about a famous British rock band.  In Gimme Shelter, the Altamont Free Concert ends with a murder as Mick Jagger pleads with the crowd to stop fighting and just sit down.  In Let It Be, things end with a random joke from John Lennon, who would himself be murdered in just ten years.  Both Gimme Shelter and Let It Be are about the end of an era and both are full of regret and a longing for a simpler and more idealistic era.  For those of us who want to understand history, they’re essential.

 

Music Video of the Day: I Am The Walrus by Styx (2005, directed by ????)


This is one of the better Beatles covers that I’ve heard.  Styx does the song justice by not trying to add any greater meaning to John Lennon’s lyrics.  Many people have claimed that this song was actually about the death of Paul McCartney in an auto accident and how the Beatles replaced him with a look-alike but Lennon always said that most of the lyrics were just meant to be nonsense.  Lennon went as far as to cite Lewis Carroll as being the main inspiration for the song.

The trippy music video is fun and cheesy at the same time.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to find the name of the video’s director.

Music Video of the Day: Cold Turkey by John Lennon (1969, directed by ????)


Happy Thanksgiving!  It is surprisingly difficult to find any good music videos about Thanksgiving so I decided to go with a video for a song that has nothing to do with Thanksgiving.  It’s called Cold Turkey.  Whether it has anything to do with turkey depends on who you ask.

When it comes to Cold Turkey, the official and most-accepted story is that John Lennon wrote it after a brief addiction to heroin and the song was inspired by the pain and difficult of quitting “cold turkey.”

Believe it or not, though, there are Cold Turkey truthers out there.  Fred Seaman, who was Lennon’s personal assistant in the late 70s, wrote in his book, The Last Days of John Lennon, that Lennon confessed to him that Cold Turkey was actually written after a bout of food poisoning and that he allowed people to believe that it was inspired by heroin withdrawal because the food poisoning story was too silly.  (Lennon claimed the poisoning was the result of eating a “cold turkey” on the day after Christmas.)  Personally, I think this sounds more like an example of Lennon’s famously sarcastic sense of humor than anything else.

Regardless of what inspired the song, Cold Turkey was Lennon’s second single away from the Beatles and the first song on which he was credited as being the sole songwriter.  (Even Give Peace A Chance was originally credited to Lennon-McCartney.)  Lennon originally wrote the song to be included on Abbey Road but, when the rest of the Beatles showed little interest in the song, Lennon instead recorded it with the Plastic Ono Band.

In 1969, when Lennon returned his MBE to the Queen, he wrote, “I am returning this MBE in protest against Britain’s involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam and against ‘Cold Turkey‘ slipping down the charts.”

Beatle fans will have a blast watching THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK – THE TOURING YEARS, director Ron Howard’s 2016 rock doc covering the Fab Four’s career from their earliest club days through the height of Beatlemania, until they stopped touring for good in 1966. The film features rare and classic footage of The Beatles live in concert around the globe, juxtaposing their rise with news events of the day and interviews with all four members.

Howard conducted brand-new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, and included archival interviews with the late John Lennon and George Harrison. Through these and behind the scenes clips and press conferences, we get a sense of what it was like to be at the center of all the Beatlemania  madness. Ringo says it best: “We just wanted to play… playing was the only thing” far as these talented musicians were concerned, but…

Music Video of the Day: Imagine by John Lennon (1971, dir. John Lennon & Yoko Ono)


Seeing as it is the International Day Of Peace, I thought it was appropriate to finally spotlight the music video for Imagine by John Lennon.

While this video received a release on its own, it was also edited into a film called Imagine, which was released a year later in 1972.

It’s not the only music video that was made for this song. In 1986/1988 Zbigniew Rybczyński made a new music video for it. Maybe I’ll spotlight that one at a later date if it is still available.

The “This Is Not Here” sign comes from the title of Ono’s art show that was being displayed in New York.

They arrive at the door with the sign on it after walking down the title of a Beatles song (The Long And Winding Road) and proceed to teleport inside the house. Maybe they did that because if that sign isn’t there, then neither are they. Perhaps it’s because the song is about an imagined reality. I’m not sure what they were going for with that.

After that, the video alternates between a closeup shot of Lennon playing the famous white piano…

and a long shot showing Ono opening the metaphorical blinds to let the light into the largely empty white room.

Once she’s done, she sits next to John and proceeds to stare off into space. Honestly, it’s kind of weird.

But then Lennon finishes the song, turns to her, gets a little goofy, and they kiss.

The song has been heard and covered so many times that even the Wikipedia article has a section called “Notable performances and cover versions.” They will often have a full list if they bother to include covers.

The video has had many unofficial postings on YouTube for years, but it took until December of last year for it to get up there officially. I wonder how many people have seen the video in addition to having heard the song.

Today, a video is supposed to go up for a song called One World One Love for the International Day Of Peace. I’ll have to look at that some time.

50 Years Ago Today: The Beatles’ SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (Capitol Records 1967)

June 2, 1967. The beginning of the so-called “Summer of Love”. The underground hippie culture was grooving toward the mainstream. And those four loveable mop tops, The Beatles , released their eighth album, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, on America’s shores, ushering in the concept of “concept albums” that still reverberates in music today. The Fab Four were Fab no more, but genuine artists, with a little help from their friend, producer George Martin.

The Beatles had stopped touring  the previous year, tired of the grind and the hysterical screaming that drowned their music out. From Caligula To El Topo, Lisa Marie Does Six More Trailers


As I type this, it is freezing outside and I have got such a cold!  Fortunately, I have another edition of Lisa Marie’s Favorite Grindhouse and Exploitation Trailers to keep me occupied while I struggle to regain my health.

1) Caligula

I can’t believe I haven’t featured the trailer from the infamous Caligula yet.  There’s actually several trailers to choose from as this film was released in so many different versions.  I’m going with this one because Bob Guccione’s pompous voice over manages to be amusing, annoying, and yet oddly charming.

2) Caligula: The Untold Story

One of the lesser known facts about Caligula is that, while Caligula was being filmed, Italian director Joe D’Amato decided to get in on all the publicity by making his own low-budget rip-off, this one co-starring his frequent muse Laura Gemser (who had previously starred in the Black Emanuelle series and would later design the goblin costumes in Troll 2).  With all the drama around the production of Caligula, Caligula: The Untold Story actually ended up being released first.

3) Troll 2

I don’t really love this trailer, to be honest.  It’s actually a bit dull and it  doesn’t even allow us to hear the guy with the glasses go, “Oh my Godddddddddd!”  But I’m including it anyway because how can you not include Troll 2?  Plus, I also rewatched the documentary Best Worst Movie a few days ago so I’ve got Troll 2 on the mind.

4) Troll

Now, this is a trailer!  It’s interesting that Troll 2 is a bizarre and busy film with a boring trailer whereas the original Troll is a boring film with a bizarre and busy trailer.  Also, listen carefully to the trailer’s narrator because you don’t want to miss the prophetic Harry Potter reference…

5) Strip Nude For Your Killer

From Andrea Bianchi comes this enjoyably trashy giallo classic.  Only the Italians could make a film called Strip Nude For Your Killer.

6) El Topo

“El Topo is bloody…El Topo is sexual…”  It’s also widely cited as being the first midnight cult film.  It’s also one that I’ve been meaning to review on this site for a while.  However, until then, here’s the trailer.  (By the way, some might debate whether El Topo should be included here.  What they’re forgetting is that a good deal of the 70s Grindhouse fare were actually misunderstood art films.  Plus, El Topo did play almost exclusively in grindhouse theaters until John Lennon saw it and declared it his favorite film of all time.)
