Happy 4th of July From The Shattered Lens

Happy 4th of July from the Shattered Lens!

I love Independence Day.  I love spending time with my family.  I love watching the fireworks at Breckenridge Park.  I even love listening to my town’s orchestra as they play the same patriotic songs year after year.

I don’t care how fashionable it is to attack America or to say that this country has never been great.  We all know the truth.  Is America perfect?  No, but no country is.  Are we having tough times right now?  Yes, but so is the rest of the world.  The idea behind America is great.  The ideals of America are great.  Sometimes, we have failed to live up to those ideals but that doesn’t make those ideals any less worthy.  The more people try to take us down, the more I remember everything that we’ve survived.  America has made mistakes.  America still has work to do.  Celebrating America does not mean ignoring the times when the nation failed to live up to its ideals.  But don’t ever think America isn’t great.

What isn’t great is shooting off fireworks at three in the morning.  Celebrate America but respect your neighbors!

Happy birthday, America!

The Covers of Ace G-Men Stories

by Gustavus Widney

From 1936 through 1942. Ace G-Men Stories published stories of FBI agents battling gangsters and, eventually, foreign spies.  Among the many regular features in the magazine were the stories of the Suicide Squad, a group of four FBI agents who took on the jobs and the missions that were too dangerous for everyone else.  Today, the magazine is highly sought by collectors because of its exciting and very pulpy covers.

Here’s a sampling of the covers of Ace G-Men Stories!

42 Ranger Home Runs!

Well, would you look at that!

It’s nearly time for the all-star game and my Texas Rangers are leading the AL West!  Right now, the Rangers have a 50-34 record.  That’s still a little bit too close for me (the Astros are only four games behind!) but it still looks like my team finally has a chance to return to the playoffs!  Of course, I don’t want to get cocky.  A lot can change during the second half of the season and it usually does.  Right now, I’m just happy to see my team with a winning record.

To celebrate, here is every home run (all 42 of them!) that the Rangers hit in June!

Get In The Mood For The 4th With These Vintage Posters

The 4th of July is just a few days!  If you’re having trouble getting in the mood to celebrate America, I understand.  The past few years haven’t been easy and sometimes, we seem more divided as a country than we ever have.  But I have faith in us, as both a country and as a citizenry.  We’ve survived tough times before and we’ll survive them again in the future.

Here, to hopefully help get you in the mood for the 4th, is selection of patriotic posters from World War I and World War II.
