In this episode of The Twilight Zone, the Earth has somehow gotten off of orbit is now being drawn closer and closer to the sun. With humanity on the verge of extinction, two women (Lois Nettleton and Betty Garde) struggle to survive as the heat keeps rising.

Full of haunting images of a deserted and sun-baked city, The Midnight Sun is one of the few episodes of The Twilight Zone that has ever given me nightmares. For some reason, the melting painting always gets to me.

This episode was written by Rod Serling and directed by Anton Leader. It was originally broadcast on November 17th, 1961.

  1. What would you do
if the earth stopped revolving and it was high noon continuesly, forever in NYC and as a result, it would just continuely get hotter and hotter? I can think of a couple of things that the characters of this episode don’t even think of(then again, my ideas may be easier said then done). As such, one couple in Lois Nettleton’s apartment building talk about heading north to Albany, NY. Why stop in Albany? Wouldn’t the temperature difference hardly be anything there? They should just keep going north until they reach far northern Canada, or one of the arctic islands up there. (I know that there are very few roads up there, but in such extreme circumstances, people could find a way). Or better yet, shouldn’t people try to get to the other side of the world, like Asia or Australia? If the earth has stopped spinning, and it’s continually, forever daytime in America, where the heat would keep rising, wouldn’t it be continually, forever nighttime in Asia, and the temperature would keep dropping? Lois and her neighbor could’ve at least tried that idea, I would’ve thought. Anyway, I still liked the suspense of this chilling, or I mean heating (lol) episode. And I liked the twist at the end.
