Let’s be honest — the Academy Awards are rarely presented to the best in film. That’s part of why I love them — you can spend a lifetime debating and second guessing the films, performers, and craftsman. that the Academy annually chooses to recognize with an Oscar.
With that in mind, here’s the first entry in a little something that I like to call Let’s Second Guess The Academy.
In this post, I’m focusing on the contest for Best Picture of 1990. In that contest, the Academy nominated five films — Awakenings, Dances With Wolves, Ghost, The Godfather Part III, and Goodfellas. In the end they named Dances With Wolves the best film of 1990. Were they right?
You tell me.
And now, let’s make things really interesting by considering which films you would have nominated if those five nominees had never been made. Vote for up to five and let’s show the Academy how it’s done.
Don’t blame me, I voted for Goodfellas! 🙂
Then I voted for Edward Scissorhands, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Metropolitan, Last Exit to Brooklyn, and Avalon.

I’d be surprised if most voters don’t vote for Goodfellas. As for the other five: Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Hamlet, Henry & June, Misery and Reversal of Fortune.

I voted for Godfather 3. As for my other five: Postcards from the Edge, Longtime Companion, Reversal of Fortune, Edward Scissorhands, and Hamlet.

My whole family loves Goodfellas. My sister knows all of the lines, and we have the soundtrack. Easy voting there. 🙂

For my 1990 pick 5 other OSCAR Noms ‘Henry : Portrait of a Serial Killer’ ‘Misery’ ‘Edward Scissorhands’ ‘Avalon’ ‘The Grifters’ .If I can pick a winner out of my 5 it would be as my FAKE winner ‘Avalon’ !
As for the real 5 I do Love the film ‘Dances with Wolves’ but the Gold Guy named OSCAR should of gone to ‘Goodfellas’ !
