Everything — from the atmosphere of ominous decadence to the dark cinematography to the wonderfully sordid art direction — just works perfectly. Fortunately, this is one of those videos where we actually have the names of some of the people who worked behind the scenes so here they are:
Director — Justin Warfield
Director of Photography — Simon Thirlaway
Production Design — Ariana Nakata, Production Designer
Costume and Wardrobe — Brooke Dulien and Stefanie King Warfield, Wardrobe Stylists
I’m not sure if the main character in this video is an actual vampire or just someone with an addiction for raw meat and blood. Either way, it’s obviously not an easy life.
This video was shot in Glasgow, Scotland and the atmospheric cinematography was credited to George Harwood. It’s like a filmed nightmare, which is my favorite type of nightmare.
The message appears to be that you should be careful who you murder because he might have a bunch of friends who will all form a drum circle and bring his ghost back to life to get revenge. That’s actually a pretty important message. There would be a lot less violence in the world if everyone took it to heart.
I like this video because it’s full of atmosphere and the whole time that you’re watching it, you’re just waiting for the world to end.
It kind of reminds me of when I was in Rome, the summer after I graduated high school. It was around 3 in the morning and because I was a hyperactive little insomniac, I was exploring the hallways of our hotel. I figured everyone else in the hotel was asleep but then I turned a corner and there was a dark-haired woman with ashen skin standing in the middle of the hallway, staring at me.
“What are you doing here?” she asked and I immediately noticed that 1) she had a British accent and 2) she was glaring at me with pure hatred in her eyes.
When I didn’t reply, she said, “I own this hotel, what are you doing here?”
I started to back away from her.
“I OWN THIS HOTEL!” she shouted.
And that’s when I took off running and I didn’t stop running until I got back to my room.
What was scary was that I had already met the owner of the hotel and I know it wasn’t that woman. For the rest of my stay in Rome, I was terrified of running into that woman but I never saw her again. Perhaps she was a ghost or maybe she was just an angry sleep walker. Who knows?
Some people will probably claim that this isn’t really a horror-themed video. Or, at the very least, it’s not horror-themed in the same way as some of the other videos that we’ve been sharing this month.
Well, that might be true but this video still gives me nightmares because I have a fear of drowning. And before you say, “Well, gee, Lisa, everyone’s scared of that,” you should understand that my fear goes beyond the normal common sense caution that someone might experience while under water. My fear is so extreme that, when my family went on vacation in Hawaii, I specifically mapped out the beach to make sure that I would never be at risk of getting sucked in by the tide. I knew exactly how far the water would reach.
It’s sad. I look so good in a bikini but you’re still definitely not going to get me out in the water. I’ll pose on the sand or five feet away from the deep end of the pool but that’s it.
Anyway, I’m glad this video has a happy ending, even if it does scare the Hell out of me.
Seriously, though, we all know what Marilyn Manson is about and what you’re going to get when you watch one of his videos and he’s been around for so long that it’s kind of hard to get shocked by him. I mean, he’s been imitated by so many other artists that he now almost seems kind of quaint.
But that said, this video is still seriously freaky.
And, of course, this song shows what Marilyn Manson does so well, taking a song that was formerly not scary at all and then making it his own. I mean, seriously….
Things start out with Robbie Williams playing just another dude who is desperate for attention. He’s so desperate that he even gets naked on the dance floor which, let’s just be honest, is nothing that any of us haven’t seen before. When that doesn’t work, he steps it up a notch.
And good for him!
Seriously, Robbie, do what you have to do. If that means removing your skin and your muscles …. well, you do you. Just try not to bleed all over my shoes.
This video starts out on a very disturbing note. Thanks to slasher films, we’re all used to seeing people being chased through the woods by a machete or knife-wielding maniac. However, by putting this particular maniac in his underwear, this video makes the subtext clear.
But then, just when the video is reaching it’s darkest point, things get empowering thanks to a well-aimed pointed stick. I can’t tell you how many slasher movies I’ve watched and wondered, “Why don’t you just kick him in the balls when he approaches?” Well, this video features a lot more than kicking.
And then the wig comes off and you can interpret that however you want. The most important thing is that the big fat perv got stabbed in the dick.
Enjoy!
(Yes, this video was directed by Eric of Tim and Eric fame.)
Unfortunately, it appears that Miss Lucifer can’t have too much fun without God interrupting with a lightning bolt but still, at least she got to enjoy herself for a half hour or so.
So, this really isn’t my type of music but it does seem appropriate for the Halloween season.
Anyone who comes by the house looking like this on Halloween will probably get all the candy that we have to give out. That’ll be followed by me saying, “We’ve given you all the candy, please leave.”
