New year, new horror films! I can’t wait.
Here’s the new trailer for one of them, The Village in the Woods.
Land, the directorial debut of actress Robin Wright, tells the story of a woman who attempts to survive alone in the wilderness. Land was not only directed by Wright but it stars her as well. It’s been accepted for the upcoming Sundance Film Festival and it’s February 12th release date would seem to indicate that Focus Features is hoping that the film will pick up some Oscar attention. (Due to the extended eligibility window, films released through the end of February 2021 will be considered eligible for the 2020 Oscars.) Robin Wright is one of those actresses who always seem to get mentioned as being an Oscar contender, though she’s never actually been nominated. We’ll see if Land changes that.
(Personally, I have a feeling that it might be overshadowed by Nomadland. But since when have I ever been right about these things?)
Anyway, here’s the trailer!
Tilda Swinton and a dog wait for the arrival of a man who never comes.
Sounds like fun, right?
Well, if anyone can make this work, it’ll be Tilda Swinton and Pedro Almodovar. This is Almodovar’s first English language short film. It’s based on a play by Jean Cocteau, one that was previously filmed by Roberto Rossellini in 1948.
Here’s the trailer:
Here’s the trailer for The Little Things, a serial killer drama that stars three very big actors: Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto. Washington was among the many stars and directors who was not happy about Warner Bros. decision to simultaneously release their films both in theaters and on HBO Max. He felt that The Little Things was made to viewed on the big screen and not just to be used to promote the latest streaming service.
For whatever it’s worth, I see Washington’s point. But, that said, it is what it is and The Little Things will be premiering (in both theaters and on HBO Max) on January 29th. For those keeping track, that means that it will be eligible for the 2020 Oscars, despite having been released in 2021. Try to make sense of all that if you can.
Here’s the trailer!
Do we really need a second one?
Didn’t the first Boss Baby get nominated for Best Animated Feature while the Academy totally ignored The Lego Batman Movie? That still makes no sense to me.
Anyway, maybe this one will manage to take a spot from a good movie as well. Here’s the trailer.
Here to keep your holidays happy is a film about death.
It’s also a film about love and romance and pursuing your dreams and all that good stuff but I have a feeling that the death is what everyone’s going to remember.
This film is set to be released on December 27th.
Here’s the trailer for The Prom, the latest film from Ryan Murphy. Apparently, Netflix is going to give this film a huge Oscar push and considering that it stars Meryl Streep, you really can’t blame them.
To be honest, this film looks like the most Ryan Murphy thing that Ryan Murphy has ever done. I imagine that some people will absolutely love it and some people will hate it and that there probably won’t be much space in between. Hopefully, this film will be a hit and Murphy will get so busy directing films that he won’t have time to do any further seasons of American Horror Story.
This film will be available of Netflix on December 11th!
Okay, everyone — one last trailer before calling it a night.
There’s currently a conspiracy theory out there that states that, since the late 80s, a cult has been murdering athletic, drunk college students and dumping their bodies in rivers. Supposedly, the cult’s calling card is that they paint a smiley face near every crime scene.
It’s a bullshit theory that makes absolutely no sense. The truth of the matter is that frat boys binge drink and are therefore vulnerable to stumbling into rivers, lakes, and creeks. It’s sad but that’s just the truth of the matter. As for the smiley faces — well, there are smiley faces everywhere. And seriously, if you’re a cult killing people in secret, why would you give away your existence with a smiley face? It’s really a dumb theory so, of course, there are a lot of people who believe it. Dr. Phil even did a show about it.
Anyway, it appears that the theory has inspired a film. Below is the trailer for Smiley Face Killers, which will be released on December 4th. Just in time for Oscar consideration!
Here’s the trailer for Survival Games which looks like it’s some sort of mockbuster version of …. well, every film that’s been released over the past ten years.
I don’t know. A lot of people are probably going to get snarky about the cheap CGI and the apparent wooden nature of some of the performances but this looks enjoyably silly to me.
