Today would have been the 93rd birthday of one of my favorite actresses, the wonderful Audrey Hepburn!

We’re all Audrey Hepburn fans here at the Shattered Lens.  How could we not be?  Long before she made her film debut, Audrey Hepburn literally risked her life as a part of the Dutch Resistance during World War II.  After she retired for regularly appearing in the movies, she devoted herself to humanitarian causes and served as a UNICEF ambassador.  She was one of the greats and, for that reason, we honor Audrey Hepburn today with….

Wow.  I am really running behind!  I nearly let this day come to an end without paying tribute to the amazing Audrey Hepburn.  Hepburn was born 91 years ago, on May 4th, 1921 in Belgium.  She went on to become one of history’s best actresses, as well as a role model for us all.  It’s not every actress who could say that she was also an active member of the anti-Nazi Dutch resistance during World War II.  After she became famous and could have very easily gotten away with turning her back on the world, Hepburn continued to make a name for herself as a humanitarian, working as Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.

In honor of her birthday, here’s a wonderfully acted scene from 1961’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Jean Rollin, la clef à mes désirs secrets, R.I.P.


My favorite film director, France’s Jean Rollin, passed away on December 15th at the age of 72. 

There are three types of people in the world: those who love Rollin, those who will eventually love Rollin once their eyes are opened, and those who just don’t matter.

When I first told Arleigh that Rollin had passed, he mentioned that the American director Blake Edwards had died as well.  Oddly enough, I sometimes think of my favorite Rollin film — Night of the Hunted (which I reviewed on this site) — as being a rather grim, Grindhouse version of another one of my favorite films, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.  The main difference, of course, is that Edwards’ Holly Golightly is allowed to triumph at the end while Rollin’s version is destroyed by an embarrassed mainstream establishment.  History, I think, has given us little room for doubt concerning which vision is closer to the truth.

In his best films (Night of the Hunted, The Living Dead Girl, Two Orphan Vampires, Requiem For A Vampire, The Grapes of Death, Fascination, Lost In New York, The Sidewalks of Bangkok, Shiver of the Vampires), Rollin proved himself to be a cinematic poet with an eye for dream-like imagery and a special skill for capturing the mysteries, ambiguities, and ultimate beauty of female friendship and sisterhood.
