Music Video of the Day: And You’re Not by Etan Salomon (2013, dir by Glendon and Isabella)

I have to say thank you to Evelyn Spurlock for recommending this video to me!

This song is performed by Etan Salomon, who is also the lead vocalist of Tetish.

The animation (and, I’m going to guess, the direction) is credited to Glendon and Isabella, who are credited with directing over 11 other music videos as well.

Enjoy!

One Hit Wonders #10: “Summertime Blues” by Blue Cheer (Philips Records 1968)

Direct from Haight-Ashbury, psychedelic hard rockers Blue Cheer ushered in the Age of Heavy Metal with “Summertime Blues”, reaching #14 on the Billboard charts in 1968 (Crank It Up LOUD!):

Singer/bassist Dickie Peterson, who lived on San Francisco’s Haight Street during the “Summer of Love” days, originally formed the band as a five-piece group, but stripped down to the power trio model popularized by Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, with Leigh Stephens on guitar and Paul Whaley on drums. Blue Cheer’s hair was longer, and their sound more ear-splitting, than anyone around, and the band’s thundering heavy metal noise made both the single and their debut album “Vincebus Eruptum” into classics of early metal then and collector’s items today.

Blue Cheer’s classic lineup: Dickie Peterson, Leigh Stephens, and Paul Whaley

The band went through numerous personnel changes before breaking up in 1970. Peterson reformed the group in the 80’s…

Music Video of The Day: One (Your Name) by Swedish House Mafia featuring Pharrell Williams (2010, dir by Henrik Hanson and Christian Larson)

I don’t really have much to say about this video, other than it’s Swedish House Mafia so I love it.  If it makes you want to dance, then it’s done its job.

Enjoy!

Music Video of the Day: Save The World by Swedish House Mafia (2011, dir by Jon Watts)

Long before Jon Watts directed Spider-Man: Homecoming, he directed another film about some unlikely super heroes.  The video for Swedish House Mafia’s Save The World shows us that the world is a dangerous place but it also encourages us to fear not.  The dogs are here!

Normally, I’m not really a dog person but I make an exception for the dogs in this video.  To be honest, cats probably wouldn’t make very good superheroes.  For one thing, all the villains would have to do would be schedule their nefarious schemes for whenever Supercat is taking a nap.  Add to that, cats are pretty self-centered.  That’s one reason why I love them but, at the same time, it’s doubtful they’d go out of their way to save a bunch of strangers.

60 Years Ago, My Grandfather Took This Picture Of Elvis Presley

On March 24th, 1958, 23 year-old Elvis Presley reported for his induction into the army.  It was a day that the press and his fans dubbed as being Black Monday.  Shortly after being inducted, Elvis and his fellow recruits were transported to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.  That’s where my grandfather, Raymond Ellis, took this picture.

Unfortunately, the copy above is not a great scan.  (When my Dad got his first scanner in 1995, the Elvis picture was one of the first things he scanned.  I just happened to come across it a few weeks ago while I was gong through some old 3.5 floppy disks.)  Hopefully, I’ll be able to get my hands on the original and share a better scan in the future.  As far as I know, this picture of Elvis has never been published anywhere else.

As for Elvis, he served in the army for two years, getting promoted to sergeant and receiving an honorable discharge in 1960.   He spent most of his army career in West Germany, where he met the woman that he would eventually marry, Priscilla Beaulieu.

Music Video of the Day: Girls Talk by Garbage, featuring Brody Dalle (2014, dir by Sophie Muller)

I’ve learned from personal experience that you have to be careful singing this song in front of certain company.

This video was directed by the amazingly prolific Sophie Muller, who — as of this writing — is credited with directing 230 videos.  She directed her first video way back in 1987 and is still working to this day.
