Music Video of the Day: I Will Remember You by Sarah MacLachlan (1999, dir. by Sophie Muller)

For today’s music video of the day, I present to you one of the most depressing songs ever written!

This is a song that I will always associate with funerals and charity commercials.  I feel either sad or guilty every time that I hear it.

Enjoy!

Music Video of the Day: We’ve Got It Goin’ On by Backstreet Boys (1995, dir. by Lionel C. Martin)

Today’s music video day is not just a Backstreet Boys video.  It’s also the very first video that the Backstreet Boys ever made and it’s for their very first single!  Just look at how young everyone used to be.

The main theme of this video seems to be that the Backstreet Boys are terrible boyfriends but it doesn’t matter because they have got it going on!  Their real girlfriends play their video girlfriends in this video and Lou Pearlman, the shady puppet master who never understood that just because we liked his band didn’t mean that we wanted to know about him, is in the video too.  My favorite Backstreet Boy was Brian.

Music Video Of The Day: Whenever, Wherever by Shakira (2001, dir. by Francis Lawrence)

Hey, everyone!  Erin Nicole, here, filling in for Lisa while she celebrates her birthday!

Today’s music video of the day could be called Shakira Can Do Everything!  She can swim with the fishes!  She can leap on the rocks!  She can outrun the horses!  Most of this video was shot against a green screen but, in the underwater scenes, Shakira actually is swimming.  Francis Lawrence went on to direct the majority of the Hunger Games films.

There’s nothing Shakira can’t do!

Music Video of the Day: Hold It Against Me by Britney Spears (2011, dir by Jonas Åkerlund)

It’s Britney, bitch!

Actually, this video feels even more appropriate today than it did when it was first released in 2011.  This video was meant to symbolize not only Britney’s career (up to that point) but also the Britney herself had returned to reclaim her superstar status.  Today, of course, it feels more like Britney has returned to reclaim her life.

Enjoy!

Music Video of the Day: Secrets From A Girl (Who’s Seen It All) by Lorde (2022, dir by Joel Kefali and Lorde)

The beach seems like a good idea right about now.  And yes, that’s the main reason that I’m sharing this video this morning.  Plus, I like Lorde.

Enjoy!

Music Video of the Day: American Woman by Lenny Kravitz (1999, dir by Paul Hunter)

I’m just going to say it.  The Lenny Kravitz version of American Woman is a hundred times better than the Guess Who version.  I know that some people have criticized Kravitz for stripping away the film’s political subtext but I’ve listened to the original song and the politics were dumb.

As for the video, I want Heather Graham’s car.  I also like this video because it reminds me of my cousins.  The Bowman family reunion in Arkansas is always home to a lot of motorcycles and a lot of American flags.

Music Video of the Day: Another Day In Paradise by Phil Collins (1989, directed by Jim Yukich)

Another Day In Paradise is one of two songs that Phil Collins has recorded about the homeless.  (The other was Man On The Corner.)  When this song first came out, Collins was accused of being a wealthy and condescending rock star who was more interested in singing about a problem than actually doing anything to solve it.  In an interview with Rolling Stone, Collins responded to the criticism with, “When I drive down the street, I see the same things everyone else sees. It’s a misconception that if you have a lot of money you’re somehow out of touch with reality.”

The video, which juxtaposes Phil singing with images of the homeless, was directed by Jim Yukich, who did the majority of Phil Collins’s and Genesis’s videos in the 80s and the 90s.  The scenes of Collins singing were filmed in New York City and were completed in under an hour.

I am fairly certain that I’ve heard a version of this song in which George H.W. Bush is heard giving a speech about the homeless.  I cannot find any official online confirmation that it exists but I know it’s out there somewhere.

Enjoy!
