Lisa Marie’s Week In Review: 8/7/23 — 8/13/23

As I’ve already said this week, rest in peace to the great William Friedkin.  Much like Paul Schrader, he was a veteran of the Golden Age and he was willing to say whatever was on his mind, regardless of whether it was the conventional wisdom or not.  We could definitely use more filmmakers like Friedkin.

It’s still hot.  When I try to think about what I did over this past week, I mostly remember getting mad about the heat.  Right now, my main focus is on getting things ready for October.

I watched two of the best crime films of the 70s, Dirty Harry and Death Wish, Eastwood and Bronson at their best!

Lisa Marie’s Week In Review: 7/24/23 — 7/30/23

Another hot week comes to an end.  I will be glad when fall gets here.  I can’t wait for October!

It’s kind of funny how we’re not hearing more about the congressional hearings on alien life.  I mean, I’m usually a proud skeptic about stuff like that and even I kind of want to know a little bit more.

Sinead O’Connor, R.I.P.  On Friday night, Jeff and I joined our friends Pat and Brad in watching two of O’Connor’s concerts that had been uploaded to YouTube.  One concert was in Dublin while the other one was in Finland.  She had an amazing voice.

Lisa Marie’s Week In Review: 7/17/23 — 7/23/23

Eh.  I don’t even want to talk about this week.  Maybe I’ll be in the mood to talk about this week next week but hopefully, when next week comes around, I will have moved onto other things.  It’s nothing to be too concerned about.  It’s just that some weeks are crappy and, as a result, you don’t want to talk about them when they end.  You just want to move on!

I will say this.  If you’re a billionaire who wants to run a social network, build it up from scratch.  Be there from the start and be clear about what you’re planning.  Don’t buy another popular site and then ruin it just so you can then force everyone onto your site.  I mean, really, I’m not difficult to please.  All I ask is that people be polite and give fair warning before changing everything.

*SIGH*

Anyway, here’s what I watched and listened to this week.  Yes, I decided to avoid the crowds as far as Barbie and Oppenheimer are concerned.  I’ll see them this upcoming week, after I get my car inspected.

Lisa Marie’s Week In Review: 7/10/23 — 7/16/23

And just like that, Hollywood shut down.

It’s been a busy week for those of us who follow entertainment.  Not only did we have the Emmy nominations but we also had SAG-AFTRA going on strike, joining the Writer’s Guild and effectively shutting down Hollywood.  It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.  I don’t want to say too much because, honestly, what do I know about labor negotiations?  But I will say that, with the era of AI approaching, I’m on the side of whoever is going to continue to give us films that are written by, directed by, and star human beings.

(As a sidenote, I usually don’t write anything about what’s been going on over at the AV Club because I’m acquainted with a few people who have written for the site and I don’t want to make things awkward for them.  But there is just something so unbelievably depressing about the news that the AV Club will be one of the sites experimenting with AI-generated articles.)

I watched a lot of true crime this week, in preparation for our October horrorthon.  Watching and reviewing 31 true crime films sounds like a good idea until you discover how depressing they are to sit through, one after another.

Lisa Marie’s Week In Review: 6/19/23 — 6/25/23

What a strange week.

I started out hoping against hope that the Titanic submersible would be found.  Of course, by the time it was found, it was already too late.  A lot of people online took seemed to take a ghoulish joy in the tragedy, reminding me of just how awful some people can be.

(I have to be honest.  Whenever I heard about the submersible in the past, I assumed that it was built and equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and that it was being guided by grizzled but competent Navy veterans.  I didn’t realize it was basically just something that someone made in their back yard.)

I then got caught up in the Russian “coup,” which turned out to be a big nothing.  On Saturday afternoon, I tweeted this:

And, by the time I returned, it was all over!

And now, today, people are sending me pictures of RFK Jr. without his shirt on and it’s true that, for a 70 year-old, he looks about 10 years younger.  But I kind of yearn for a world where presidential candidates stay off twitter and keep their shirts on.  It’s just shaping up to be a weird year and 2024 is obviously going to be a lot stranger.

As for this week, I continued to work on my reviews for this year’s Horrorthon.  I’m getting an early start so I can enjoy October this year as opposed to spending all of my time playing catch-up.  I finished watching all of the religious films and now I’m watching movies about serial killers.  It’s a strange world.
