The Five Covers of Amazing Detective Tales

Amazing Detective Tales started out as a pulp magazine called Scientific Detective Monthly.  The first issue of Scientific Detective Monthly was published in January of 1930 but the low sales convinced the publisher that audiences were turned off by the word “Scientific.”  In June, Scientific Detective Tales was rebooted as Amazing Detective Tales, with covers that combined horror and crime.  Unfortunately, the title change did not lead to greater sales and Amazing Detective Tales was cancelled after five issues.  The covers, which were done by some of the best artists working in the pulps, remain highly sought by collectors.

Here are the five covers of Amazing Detective Tales:

The Futuristic Covers of Future Science Fiction

January, 1954. Artwork by Alex Schomburg

Future Science Fiction was a magazine that started in 1939 and was initially published until 1943.  The World War II paper shortage brought the magazine to a temporary end but, in 1950, the magazine was relaunched and ran for another ten years.  Future featured stories about aliens, different worlds, and future wars.  Writers such as Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Poul Anderson, and Philip K. Dick appeared in the magazine.  Today, though, the magazine is best remembered for covers that brought a distinct pulp sensibility to the science fiction genre.

Here are just a few of the covers of Future Science Fiction.

The Exciting Covers of Exciting Love

The magazine Exciting Love ran from 1941 to 1958 and it featured stories about lovelorn teenagers, loyal girlfriends waiting for their sweethearts to return from serving overseas, and married couples learning how to make it work.  If the magazine had been called Boring Love, it would not have lasted as long.

Below is a small sampling of the covers of Exciting Love.  I think almost all of these covers were done by Earle K. Bergey.  His signature is visible on a few of them and almost all of them seem to be done in his style.  The one exception is the the final cover.  That cover is from 1958 and, since Bergey died in 1952, we can be sure that he was not responsible for it.
