117 years ago today, Laurence Olivier was born in Surrey. The son of a clergyman, Olivier would go on to become one of the greatest stage actors of the 20th Century. He would also have a distinguished film career, one that led to him frequently being described as being the world’s greatest living actor.
He is perhaps best-known for his Shakespearean performances. He won multiple Oscars for directing and starring in 1948’s Hamlet. Today’s scene that I love comes from that film and features Olivier at his best, as both an actor and a director.
A great post. Laurence Olivier was definitely a legendary actor that built a lasting legacy in the film industry. I haven’t seen many of his movies, but I did love his performance in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rebecca”. In the role of a widower grieving the loss of his wife, Olivier was outstanding. He brought a larger-than-life presence to the role that made it iconic. Even Armie Hammer who portrayed the character several years later could not hold a candle towards Olivier’s timeless performance. He was a one-of-a-kind actor that simply could not in any way be imitated. If you’re a fan of Olivier, then “Rebecca” is definitely worth a watch. Here’s why I adore it:

Armie Hammer does not impress me. Period.

Yes, I definitely agree with you. I have never been truly impressed with his acting. However, if there’s one film where he did leave a lasting impression on me it’s “Call Me by Your Name”. He was so good in that movie as a gay lover. I would recommend seeing that film even if you’re not an Armie Hammer fan. Here’s why I loved it:
