Today, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the 15 semi-finalists for this year’s Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Without further ado, here they are:
- “Captain America: The First Avenger”
- “Cowboys & Aliens”
- “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2″
- “Hugo”
- “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”
- “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”
- “Real Steel”
- “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”
- “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”
- “Sucker Punch”
- “Super 8″
- “Thor”
- “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”
- “The Tree of Life”
- “X-Men: First Class”

I would be very surprised if Rise of the Planet of the Apes didn’t win this outright.

Gotta be honest, this is a REALLY tough one so far. Visual splendor alone, Hugo is the best of these.

To be honest, I was worried that I would see Anonymous listed here for its painfully tacky CGI Elizabethan London. I’m going to predict that Tree of Life will win one Oscar next year and it’ll be this one.

I don’t know what Ghost Protocol or Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows are supposed to bring to the table, but I feel hat this may be a battle between Planet of the Apes, Hugo (my main pick here) and possibly Super 8 (though that’s only on the train crash scene, which really was good).
