Yes, I did watch the Super Bowl this year. I don’t really know much about football but my boyfriend’s from Baltimore so I cheered for Baltimore during tonight’s game and I made sure to wear my favorite purple bra and thong. (Of course, I was wearing more clothes than just those two items but apparently, the important thing was that I was wearing at least a little purple.) However, I have to admit that I was mainly watching the game for the commercials!
Super Bowl commercials have become something of an American tradition, beyond the fact that most of them tend to be overproduced and kinda sucky. But every year, after the game has been played, people spends weeks debating which commercial was the best.
With that in mind, here are my 6 favorite commercials of Super Bowl XLVII.
6) Samsung Mobile USA — The Next Big Thing
It goes on a little long but I still liked it.
5) E-Trade — Baby Gone Wild
I don’t care what anybody says, I like the E-Trade Baby.
4) Mercedes-Benz — Willem DaFoe is Satan.
It’s really not that much of a shock.
3) M&Ms — I Would Do Anything For Love
I love how upset the M&Ms get over the prospect of being eaten. They’ve got a point, to be honest.
2) Budweiser — “Brotherhood”
This commercial made me cry.
1) Calvin Klein — “Concept”
You probably already knew this was going to be number one. This commercial was the perfect antidote to years of creepy GoDaddy commercials.
Through the Shattered Lens 
All solid picks. The only commercial that was really memorable for me (aside from the amazing Calvin Klein one, of course) was the trailer for Fast & Furious 6. Why would I care about any of that other stuff now that I know The Rock and Vin Diesel are re-uniting?

Being an Australian, I don’t have to worry about the commercials.
Watching the game through ESPN, you basically just get commercials for other shows on ESPN (as per usual). Of course, the game was handled by CBS, but here in Australia, you’d turn the channel to ESPN and get the CBS telecast.
I tend to ignore most commercials, anyway. One of the best things about reading a book or watching a film is the total lack of commercials.
I recall many years ago when the Rams played the Titans in the Super Bowl that was shown on SBS Australia, and at the time, SBS never took commercial breaks in the midst of its programmes. So whenever the American station took a commercial break, all you would see is a random shot of the field and players milling about doing nothing, total silence from the commentary, and then commentary and play would resume a couple minutes or so later.
If you don’t understand football, then the penultimate play in the Ravens versus 49ers game would have confused the heck out of you. But take my word for it, it was an absolutely brilliant piece of strategy. The final three minutes of the game was like a chess match. It reminded me of what American football is really all about.
While I’m here, I should give a shout out to the game officials, led by referee Jerome Boger, his fellow crew members being Darrell Jenkins (umpire), Steve Stelljes (head linesman), Byron Boston (line judge), Craig Wrolstad (field judge), Joe Larrew (side judge) and Dino Pganelli (back judge).
They called a really great game. Especially when you consider the snafu with half the lights in the New Orleans Superdome going out early in the third quarter. Whenever a game is delayed for a long period, it’s difficult to keep your head in the game, even if you’re an official. Early in the game, there was a big post-play pile-up and some argy-bargy, but the officials did a great job of ironing out the situation and keeping control of the game. However, I must say, what was with that Ravens player shoving the official and not being tossed from the game? The NFL needs to look at stuff like that.
This was Jerome Boger’s first Super Bowl, so (referee) hats off to him and his colleagues for doing an outstanding job in what was yet another amazing game of gridiron.

Corrected from the above, the back judge’s name should read Dino Paganelli. I cut and pasted the names of the crew members, but didn’t realise until after posting, I should have bought a vowel. Where’s Baby John Burgess when you need him?
