Brad’s “Artwork of the Day” – a chilly morning on South Fourche!

After an action packed Thanksgiving holiday with our family over the last few days, my wife and I retreated to our little slice of paradise in Central Arkansas for the weekend. It’s a chilly morning along the South Fourche River, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Now bring on Christmas! 🎅🎄

My happy place… a little story about me, my family, and an unexpected run-in with Hollywood!

My dad grew up in the Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas. Some folks would surely call them hills, and they’d probably be right, because I come from a family of hillbillies. And there’s no place I like to go back to more often than those hills in Perry County, Arkansas. It’s probably been 35 years ago now that dad found a beautiful patch of land in the Ouachita National Forest that runs along the South Fourche River, just a few miles from where he spent his summers with his Grandpa and Grandma Crain, mostly working their farm, but also fishing and hunting anytime he could. This started a journey of patience when dad went to the county courthouse, found out who owned the property (an older lady who lived out of state), and wrote his first letter to see if she was interested in selling. She responded to that first letter and said that she was saving the property for her children to have as an inheritance. A few years later, dad wrote again. Still not interested, the lady kindly turned down dad’s offer and thanked him for his interest. Fast forward a few years later, about 8 years after dad’s first letter, and a man contacted my dad this time. It was the lady’s son, who had found my dad’s letters as he was going through his mother’s house after she had passed away. He wanted to sell, and dad made him an offer that he couldn’t refuse. Now owning the land of his dreams, dad and mom proceeded to build a cabin. When I say they built the cabin, I don’t mean that they hired someone else to build the cabin, I mean that they built the cabin from the ground up. For the longest time, the only power they had was the generator that he brought with him to the location. Now fast forward 25 years later, and it’s the place we have spent all of our holidays together for the last couple of decades. It’s truly my happy place, the place I go when I need to disconnect from the stresses of life and reconnect with my wife, my family, and nature itself. I took this picture a few feet off of the back deck a few moments ago.

My wife and I will spend this weekend sipping coffee off the back deck, listening to the sounds of the river rolling by, and then watching movies when the sun goes down. I’ll go see my brother this morning, who owns the local convenience store in the area, and I’ll work his cash register as he makes the best fried bologna sandwiches in central Arkansas. My brother bought the store five years ago, continuing a family tradition that started in 1940 when our great grandparents bought the store. It’s been in our family ever since. One of the coolest experiences in my life took place at the store a few months ago. The store has the perfect, old-timey, backwoods country store look, something even Hollywood noticed. In early August, the store was used as a filming location for a movie with major Hollywood talent. For a guy who’s been obsessed with movies since we got our first VCR in the 80’s, I asked my brother if my wife and I could come over and watch them film. I spent the day watching them film, visiting with a producer, visiting with the director, even taking a picture or two with the actors filming that day. It was truly one of the most awe-inspiring days of my life. My wife and I were able to get the picture below on that day. I can’t lie, the beauty of my wife is probably what allowed this to happen!

Have a wonderful weekend, my friends. I hope all of you get to spend part of it in your own happy place.

Live Tweet Alert – #MondayMuggers present JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE (2006)!

Every Monday night at 9:00 Central Time, my wife Sierra and I host a “Live Movie Tweet” event on X using the hashtag #MondayMuggers. We rotate movie picks each week, and our tastes are quite different. Tonight, Monday, August 18th, we’ll be watching JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE (2006), starring Jesse Metcalfe, Ashanti, Arielle Kebbel, Sophia Bush, Brittany Snow, Penn Badgley, Jenny McCarthy, Terrell J. Ramsey, and Taylor Kitsch.

The plot: Three ex-girlfriends of a serial cheater set up their former lover to fall for the new girl in town so they can watch him get his heart broken.

I’ll admit I’ve been watching some Jesse Metcalfe films lately. Just yesterday I watched the Hallmark Christmas movie CHRISTMAS NEXT DOOR (2017) and the culture clash romantic comedy THE OTHER END OF THE LINE (2007). I enjoyed them both. Sierra wants to go back and watch the DALLAS T.V. series reboot where Jesse played a grown-up Christopher Ewing! Keeping with that theme, tonight we’ll be watching a very young Jesse as he deals with a plot of revenge from a group of beautiful but scorned young ladies. I’ve never actually watched the film, but it sounds like an enjoyable way to spend 90 minutes. If that sounds fun to you, join us on #MondayMuggers and watch JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE. It’s streaming on Amazon Prime! See the Trailer below:

Brad’s “Scene of the Day” – Cary Grant & Eva Marie Saint hang out on Mt. Rushmore!

Have y’all been to Mt. Rushmore? My wife and I stopped by in 2023 on the way home from Yellowstone. It was pretty cool stuff!

I remember as I was driving up to Mt. Rushmore, I saw a sign that mentioned the Alfred Hitchcock movie NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959) being filmed there. I hadn’t seen the movie in many years, so I decided to watch it again when I got home to celebrate the trip. I enjoyed seeing Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint hanging out near the giant rock faces of some of America’s great presidents. In celebration of Hitchcock’s 126th birthday in cinema heaven, I thought I would share that scene with all of you!

The plot: Two lovable hillbillies are headed to their “fixer-upper” vacation cabin to drink some beer, do some fishin’, and have a good time. But when they run into a group of preppy college kids who assume from their looks that they must be in-bred, chainsaw-wielding killers, Tucker & Dale’s vacation takes a bloody and hilarious turn for the worse.

Sierra and I have been on vacation over the last week, and we truly appreciate Lisa hosting for us while we were gone! Today, we’re both trying to get going again at work and in regular life, so I thought this horror-comedy, that I haven’t watched in many years, might be some easygoing fun! Happy 4th of July!

My wife and I recently enjoyed a little weekend getaway to Branson, MO. Branson is a little “tourist town” in the Ozark Mountains just across the Arkansas state line, and it’s a place I’ve been visiting my entire life. One of my favorite things to do there is to take in an evening dinner cruise and show on the Showboat Branson Belle. The weather was perfect on the night of our cruise, and after enjoying some time on the top deck, my wife snapped this picture on our way back into the boat. This picture means so many things to me… along with a beautiful sunset and a moment in our lives that felt so perfect, it also captures a flag that stands for something special, something that I could never adequately put into words. A little later that evening all of the veterans of the armed forces in the audience were asked to stand and be recognized for their service to our country. Looking at those men and women who were standing, I felt those same feelings I had felt earlier looking at the flag. I still don’t have the perfect words, but I do know that we’re blessed. Happy 4th of July, friends!

Brad’s Video of the Day – “Wanted Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi!

I’ve chosen Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” as my video of the day solely because my wife is in it. The music video was partially filmed in West Virginia, which is where my wife is from. She saw them at the Huntington Civic Center in Huntington, West Virginia. Portions of that concert were included in the video, as well as portions in Rochester, Chicago, Denver, Pittsburgh, and Oklahoma City. (Pictured below the video is my wife having a blast!)

So, let’s take a trip back to 1987 and enjoy “Wanted Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi!
