Music Video of the Day: Rivers of Mercy by Tears For Fears (2023, dir by Aloka Gent)

Today’s music video of the day comes to us from Tears For Fears and their seventh studio album, The Tipping Point.

This song is a mix of melancholy emotions and hope for a better future.  As the video shows it can be easy to feel like you’re drowning in today’s world, with its constant flood of negativity and disturbing imagery.  As I sit here typing this post, I still can’t go on twitter without immediately being confronted by a video of a woman being burned alive in a New York subway car.  There’s only so much of that ugliness that one can see before it becomes tempting to assume that the human race is defined solely by the worst members of it.  The majority of the people that I know, though, are kind, loving, and tolerant.  And if they see you drowning, they’ll be the first to reach out and pull you to safety.

In other words, I think we’re going to be okay.

Enjoy!

Song of the Day: Nobody Does It Better by Carly Simon

Today’s song of the day was the second James Bond theme song to receive an Oscar nomination, Carly Simon’s Nobody Does It Better.  It’s a song that I’m picking for today because, in 2025, nobody is going to do it better than the crew here at the Shattered Lens!

Add to that, it’s just a really good song and a great way to start of the New Year.  This is one of the few songs that I can sing, though not as well as Carly Simon.  Still, there was one summer night when I totally slayed this song during karaoke night at Grandpa Tony’s.  The audience was full of drunk yankees who were in Dallas for some sort of pharmaceutical convention and they loved me!

Here is Carly Simon performing today’s song of the day.

Nobody does it better
Makes me feel sad for the rest
Nobody does it half as good as you
Baby, you’re the best

I wasn’t lookin’ but somehow you found me
I tried to hide from your love light
But like heaven above me
The spy who loved me
Is keepin’ all my secrets safe tonight

And nobody does it better
Though sometimes I wish someone could
Nobody does it quite the way you do
Why’d you have to be so good?

The way that you hold me
Whenever you hold me
There’s some kind of magic inside you
That keeps me from runnin’
But just keep it comin’
How’d you learn to do the things you do?

And nobody does it better
Makes me feel sad for the rest
Nobody does it half as good as you
Baby, baby
Darlin’, you’re the best

Baby, you’re the best
Baby, you’re the best
Sweet baby, you’re the best
Darlin’, you’re the best
Darlin’, you’re the best
Sweet baby, you’re the best
Baby, you’re the best
Sweet baby

Music Video of the Day: Stay Golden by Saint Motel (2024, dir by A/J Jackson and Mario Contini)

Honestly, what better way to start the New Year than with my favorite band, Saint Motel?

I like this video because they’re stars, they’ve got a tour bus, they’re driving across the country, and they’ve got adoring fans everywhere but the members of the band still come across as just being a very cool and laid back group of people.  They’re having fun and they’re passing that fun on to the folks who come to see and hear them.  Saint Motel is staying golden.

I saw Saint Motel in Dallas in 2020.  They’re a great live band.  They bring a lot of energy to the stage and it’s obvious that they love their fans.  I recommend this band to everyone.  Hopefully, they’ll provide the soundtrack to my 2025.

Enjoy!

Song of the Day: Hooray for Santa Claus by Milton DeLugg and the Little Eskimos

Did everyone have a good Christmas?  Did everyone get everything that they wanted?

If the answer’s yes, you have one man to thank for that!

Hooray for Santy Claus!

(You might recognize this song from one of our favorite holiday classics, Santa Claus Conquers The Martians!)
