Go Rangers!

Tonight, the Rangers and the Astros will be meeting in Game One of the ALCS.  It’s the first time that these two teams have played each other in the postseason.  It’s the first meeting of Texas’s two baseball teams and one of those teams will go on to the World Series.

Yeah, I’m nervous.

When the Astros previously went to the World Series, I cheered for them.  Even after all of the cheating was revealed, I still cheered for the Astros because they were representing my home state and the American League.  But, after a ten-year play-off drought and after sticking with this team through so many disappointing seasons, I want my Rangers to finally return to the World Series.  The last time we went to the World Series was in 2011.  The Rangers were the better team but they still lost to the Cardinals.  I want this to be a year when the winner of the World Series is not only a Texas team but also my team.  This year, I want to see the Rangers defeat the NCLS and if that means they keep Philadelphia from winning the World Series, that would be even better.  Sorry, Astros.

It won’t be easy.  The Rangers often struggled against the Astros during the regular season.  But no one gave the Rangers much of a chance of sweeping the Rays and the Orioles either.

Either way, it’s going to be a great ALCS between two great Texas team.  Go Rangers!

CONGRATS TO THE RANGERS!

For the first time since 2016, my Texas Rangers are headed to the MLB play-offs!

I got a little nervous, a few months ago, when it seemed like the Rangers had lost all of their momentum and when I saw that they had fallen behind both the Astros and the Mariners in the standings, I started to prepare myself for another disappointment.  I started to feel like it would be another post-season of me having to cheer for the Astros by default.  But the Rangers fought back and finally, after seven years, the Rangers have clinched a play-off berth!

CONGRATS TO THE RANGERS!  Now, win that final game against the Mariners, win the AL West, and keep fighting until the World Series!

Rangers Update!

It’s time for a baseball update!

The last time I wrote about the current season on this site, I was feeling mighty cocky because the Rangers were in first place and all the other teams in the AL West were struggling.  I was excited and, no matter how many times I said that I knew anything could happen, I really was envisioning that World Series victory in my head.

Now, much later into the season, the Rangers have fallen to third.  We are just a few games behind The Mariners and the Astros and anything could happen but it’s still not where I want us to be right now.  I’m not even trying to think about the fact that, if they hit a hot streak, the Angels could even catch up to us.

I’m trying to stay positive, though!  Here’s every Rangers homerun from August!

42 Ranger Home Runs!

Well, would you look at that!

It’s nearly time for the all-star game and my Texas Rangers are leading the AL West!  Right now, the Rangers have a 50-34 record.  That’s still a little bit too close for me (the Astros are only four games behind!) but it still looks like my team finally has a chance to return to the playoffs!  Of course, I don’t want to get cocky.  A lot can change during the second half of the season and it usually does.  Right now, I’m just happy to see my team with a winning record.

To celebrate, here is every home run (all 42 of them!) that the Rangers hit in June!

The Rangers Are 2-0!

Yesterday, the Texas Rangers won their second game of the 2023 season, beating the Phillies by 13 runs!  Congratulations to the Rangers, for getting this season off to a good start.  I know the Rangers aren’t going to win every game this season and I know that there’s a long way to go before the post-season.  But it just feels like this is the season that my team is finally going to get it together.

So, I’m happy.

Congratulations to the Texas Rangers!

I couldn’t let this day end without saying congratulations to my Texas Rangers, who won their first game of the 2023 season today!  After the first three innings, I was feeling pretty down because the Phillies were leading, 5-0.  But then, in the fourth inning, the rangers went from being down by 5 to being up by 4!  We went on to win, 11-7.

That’s why I love baseball.  It’s never over until you get that final out and a good team can always make a comeback.  It’s been a while since I’ve seen that Rangers dominate on offense like that.  I used to feel like the Rangers would give up if they found themselves down by a certain number of runs but I didn’t feel that way watching this game.  Today, the Rangers were determinedto win.  I hope it’s a sign of things to come.

It took them a while but the MLB finally uploaded the game’s highlights.

All Of The Rangers’s 2022 Home Runs!

Good news!  We’ve only got 11 more days to go until the start of the MLB regular season!  Will this be the year that my Rangers finally get it together and return to the post-season for the first time since 2016?  Even if we don’t make the post-season, can we at least have our first winning season in seven years?  I hope so!  But even if we don’t, I’ll still be cheering for my team and whoever represents the AL in the World Series!

(Unless it’s the Blue Jays.)

Here’s a video I found of every single Rangers homerun in 2022!  Watching it and hearing “Gone!” over and over again has got me pumped up for the season!

Opening day is March 30th!  The Rangers will be hosting the Phillies.

Congratulations to the Astros and the Braves!

Congratulations to the Atlanta Braves and the Houston Astros for finally giving the world what it truly needs this year, an all-Southern World Series!  It’s the Southeast vs. the Deep South as Houston tries to beat Atlanta and win their second World Series title.  Meanwhile, for the Braves, this is their 1st World Series appearance since 1999.

I have to cheer for the Astros because they’re from my homestate but I won’t blame anyone who is cheering for Atlanta!  I think either team could win.  With Game 5 scheduled for October 31st, the Series might even be decided on Halloween!

The Great Pumpkin has been good to us this year!

Congratulations to both teams and good luck next week!

And who knows?  Maybe next year, my Rangers will finally get it together.  Things have to turn around sometime, right?

Mr. Baseball (1992, dir. by Fred Schepisi)

I watched Mr. Baseball last night because I was feeling depressed over the Rangers 25-42 record and I thought that watching a movie about baseball (it’s right there in title!) might cheer me up.

Tom Selleck plays Jack Elliott, an aging first baseman player who was once the MVP of the New York Yankees but whose best days are behind him.  Everyone realizes it but him.  Looking to sign a hotshot rookie, the Yankees put Jack on the trading block.  However, the only team that’s interesting in signing an arrogant veteran with a bad knee is a Japanese team, the Nagoya Chunichi Dragons.

Though he’s not happy about the trade, Jack move to Japan and takes his place as a member of the Dragons.  In Japan, he’s nicknamed “Mr. Baseball” and is told by the team’s owner that he’s expected to hit 54 home runs during the season.  However, Jack manages to alienate the team with his boorish attitude and his lack of understanding of Japanese culture.  With the help of another American player (Dennis Haysbert) and his girlfriend (Aya Takanashi), Jack finally sets aside his resentment, becomes a part of the team, and leads the Dragons into a pennant race.  He also learns how to improve his swing.

When Jack first arrived in Japan, I was worried that Mr. Baseball was going to be a culturally insensitive comedy, all about Jack teaching the Japanese players how to play baseball like the Americans.  I was dreading the thought of watching a movie full of stereotypes and cheap jokes about the way people talk.  Instead, Mr. Baseball actually treated Japanese baseball with respect and the emphasis was on Jack learning the importance of setting aside his ego, playing as a member of the team, and listening to the team’s manager, Uchimaya (Ken Takakurya).  Even though most of the film’s humor does come from the culture clash between the American Jack and his Japanese teammates, Mr. Baseball doesn’t really take any cheap shots at anyone and I appreciated that.  Instead, the theme of the film was that, cultural differences aside, everyone on the team loved the game of baseball.

Other than the fact that it was taking place in Japan, Mr. Baseball was a typical baseball film.  The plot did not hold many surprises.  Jack starts off as a star player, goes into a slump once he lets his ego get the better of him, and manages to come out of it just in time for the pennant race.  It’s predictable but Tom Selleck and Dennis Haysbert were convincing baseball players and I liked the film’s look at the culture surrounding baseball in Japan.  Mr. Baseball is hardly the greatest baseball movie ever made but it did cheer up this Rangers fan.
