Music Video of the Day: Wuthering Heights (1978, directed by Keith MacMillan)


On August 1st, 1981, MTV premiered. Over the course of 24 hours, 166 unique music videos were played on MTV. Yes, there was a time when the M actually did stand for music.

The 67th video to make its MTV premiere on August 1st was one of the videos that Kate Bush did for Wuthering Heights.  There’s actually two videos for this song, each featuring similar choreography.  One version features Kate dressed in a white dress and dancing in a mist-filled room.  The other version features Kate in a red dress and dancing in a grassy area.  In both videos, the suggestion is that Kate Bush is playing a ghost, which makes either version of Wuthering Heights a good video to start October with.

Both videos have their fans and I’m not sure which one was first played on MTV.  But I’m going to go with the video of Kate dressed in white because it was the first of the two videos to be released and it was specifically made for the UK.  Produced three years before the premiere of MTV, this video is considered to be one of the most influential ever made and it helped to show that music videos could be more than just simple performance clips.

On August 1st, 1981, MTV premiered. Over the course of 24 hours, 166 unique music videos were played on MTV. Yes, there was a time when the M actually did stand for music.

The 57th video to air on MTV was the video for Kate Bush’s The Man With The Child In His Eyes.  Amazingly, Bush wrote this song when she was only 13 and recorded it when she was 16.

The video was directed by Keith MacMillan, who directed several music videos in the 70s and early 80s.  Along with Kate Bush, he worked for artists such as Paul McCartney, Culture Club, Pay Benatar, and Motorhead.

Music Video of the Day: Hammer Horror by Kate Bush (1979, dir. Keith MacMillan)


Welcome to October on Through the Shattered Lens. I’ll try to do my best to find 31 October-related music videos.

It is about an actor and his friend. His friend is playing the lead in a production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a part he’s been reading all his lfe, waiting for the chance to play it. He’s finally got the big break he’s always wanted, and he is the star. After many rehearsals he dies accidentally, and the friend is asked to take the role over, which, because his own career is at stake, he does. The dead man comes back to haunt him because he doesn’t want him to have the part, believing he’s taken away the only chance he ever wanted in life. And the actor is saying, “Leave me alone, because it wasn’t my fault – I have to take this part, but I’m wondering if it’s the right thing to do because the ghost is not going to leave me alone and is really freaking me out. Every time I look round a corner he’s there, he never disappears.”

The song was inspired by seeing James Cagney playing the part of Lon Chaney playing the hunchback – he was an actor in an actor in an actor, rather like Chinese boxes, and that’s what I was trying to create.

At least that’s what you’ll get when you go to a page that includes an article which appears to have been sitting out there since 1990. It is from “Kate’s KBC article Issue 3 (November 1979)”. Back in the day, there was a fan magazine called The Kate Bush Club. The page linked to above contains that excerpt from it where Kate talks about the song and video.

Surprisingly, despite the title, that same article begins with Kate saying the following:

The song is not about, as many think, Hammer Horror films.

She goes on to describe the making of the video:

Making the video of Hammer Horror was the first time I had worked with a dancer. I wanted to do something different with it, using a dancer, and I was sitting in a hotel room in Australia when it suddenly came to me–the whole routine happened before my eyes–and the next morning at 9 a.m. the dancer turned up to start work. We’d never met before, and in ten minutes we were having to throw each other around. He was so inspiring that we did the video that same afternoon.

She continues for a bit after that:

I did it again in New Zealand, when we arrived late, so I went straight into the routine with a dancer I’d never met before who had learnt it from the video. It was the strangest experience–I got to the chorus and suddenly this total stranger appeared behind me doing the routine perfectly. I just couldn’t stop laughing, and we had to do about three takes.

In the show I wanted to use the same routine, but I couldn’t possibly sing it and dance at the same time, and I thought it was important not to mime it, as I wanted it to be a dance number, totally dedicated to dance, so I could let rip more. It was important that everyone should know that it wasn’t a cheat, so I decided to dance to a backing track, and it was the only number in the show that wasn’t live.

I’ve already done two videos that director Keith MacMillan worked on, but I haven’t talked too much about him.

Keith MacMillan appears to be his real name. When he directed music videos he used the name Keef. It encompassed himself as the director and John Weaver as a producer. However, he was a photographer and designed album covers as well. There, he used the pseudonym of Marcus Keef. One particularly noteworthy cover is the one he did for Black Sabbath’s debut album:

He did the cover of Paranoid as well. He worked with numerous artists, such as David Bowie and Rod Stewart. There’s a short article that features some of his work here.

This song was on Kate Bush’s second album called Lionheart.

I’m not sure if he did the cover art, but it wouldn’t surprise me based on looking at his other album covers. In addition, according to mvdbase, he directed all of her early music videos as part of Keef.

Music Video of the Day: Cloudbusting by Kate Bush (1985, dir. Julian Doyle)


Happy Father’s Day!

I had this video picked out as far back as last year to do for today. What I didn’t know is that Wikipedia already has a nice article about it that pretty much covers anything I would say. Here are the two relevant passages from the article:

The song is about the very close relationship between psychologist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich and his young son, Peter, told from the point of view of the mature Peter. It describes the boy’s memories of his life with Reich on their family farm, called Orgonon where the two spent time “cloudbusting”, a rain-making process which involved pointing at the sky a machine designed and built by Reich, called a cloudbuster. The lyric further describes Wilhelm Reich’s abrupt arrest and imprisonment, the pain of loss the young Peter felt, and his helplessness at being unable to protect his father. The song was inspired by Peter Reich’s 1973 memoir, A Book of Dreams, which Bush read and found deeply moving.

The music video, directed by Julian Doyle, was conceived by Terry Gilliam and Kate Bush as a short film. The video features Canadian actor Donald Sutherland playing the role of Wilhelm Reich, and Bush in the role of his young son, Peter. The video shows the two on the top of a hill trying to make the cloudbuster work. Reich leaves Peter on the machine and returns to his lab. In flashback, he remembers several times he and Peter enjoyed together as Reich worked on various scientific projects, until he is interrupted by government officials who arrest him and ransack the lab. Peter senses his father’s danger and tries to reach him, but is forced to watch helplessly as his father is driven away. Peter finally runs back to the cloudbuster and activates it successfully, to the delight of his father who sees it starting to rain.

Filming took place at The Vale of White Horse in Oxfordshire, England. The hill on which the machine is positioned is Dragon Hill, immediately below the Uffington White Horse, a prehistoric hill carving which can be seen briefly in a couple of the shots. Bush found out in which hotel Sutherland was staying from actress Julie Christie’s hairdresser and went to his room to personally ask him to participate in the project. In the UK, the music video was shown at some cinemas as an accompaniment to the main feature. Due to difficulties on obtaining a work visa for Sutherland at short notice, the actor offered to work on the video for free. Although the events depicted in the story took place in Maine, the newspaper clipping in the music video reads “The Oregon Times,” likely a reference to Reich’s home and laboratory “Orgonon”.

The Cloudbusting machine in the video was designed and constructed by people who worked on the Alien creature and bears only a superficial resemblance to the real cloudbusters, which were smaller and with multiple narrow, straight tubes and pipes, and were operated while standing on the ground. In a reference to the source material of the song, Bush pulls a copy of Peter Reich’s “A Book of Dreams” out of Sutherland’s coat.

The full length video features a longer version of the song which is different from the Organon Mix released on 12 Inch.

If you go to the article and follow the cited sources, then it’s like taking a trip back to the 1990’s Internet. The most interesting thing I noticed in one of those sources is from an interview on SuicideGirls with Donald Sutherland:

DRE: How was it being in the video for Kate Bushs video for Cloudbursting?

DS: Shes such a stoner. She was great. She came out of this camper at eight in the morning smoking a joint and I said What are you doing? and she said, I havent been straight for eight years. I got into the video because Kate found out from Julie Christies hairdresser that I was staying at The Savoy. She came and knocked on my door. She was so small that when I opened the door I didnt see anybody. I looked down and there she was. She told me she wanted me to play Wilhelm Reich. I wanted to be able to create a character that could hold a child by his feet and hit him against the side of a building and turn his head into a squashed pumpkin, which is what we did. So it so profoundly impressed me that she wanted to do that. I adored her. I thought she was great.

There are two things I can add since they aren’t mentioned in the article.

The government agents going down the steps remind the audience of the Odessa Steps scene from Battleship Potemkin (1925).

The other thing is that Wilhelm Reich did a lot of work in the area of sex, which included a 1936 book called The Sexual Revolution–the original title is Die Sexualität im Kulturkampf (“sexuality in the culture war”). Here is a comparison between an actual cloudbuster and the one in the video as it is shown at the emotional climax.

Reich also did work specifically on the orgasm, such as his book Die Funktion des Orgasmus (“The Function of the Orgasm”). The way the cloudbuster was supposed to work involved what Reich called “orgone energy”, that is from the word “orgasm.”

Assuming they are still up, note that J.J. Jackson slips up in the interview. That’s early MTV for you.

A fun fact about J.J. Jackson is that he was hired by mistake. Here’s the story from the book I Want My MTV:

John Sykes: The J.J. Jackson we hired wasn’t the J.J. we meant to hire.

Robert Morton: That’s true. Pittman’s one direction to us was “Find a black VJ.” He told us about a guy named J.J. Johnson, and said, “He’s really good. Track him down.” So I looked all over for J.J. Johnson. Subsequently, I found out who he was; a very good-looking black guy who had a great voice. But I couldn’t find him. I called every radio station in the country. Finally I called KMEL in San Francisco and said, “Do you have a guy named J.J. Johnson working for you?” They said, “No, but we have J.J. Jackson.” I said, “Well, let me talk to him.” We auditioned him and I said to Pittman, “Here’s your J.J.”

The video was directed by Julian Doyle who has worked on several Monty Python related films such as Life of Brian (1979), Time Bandits (1975), and Brazil (1985). He’s done other work as well. As for music videos, I can find six credits. He also played the police sergeant who puts his hand over the camera at the end of Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975).

Music Video of the Day: And Dream Of Sheep by Kate Bush (2016, dir. ???)


Last year Kate Bush released a live album called Before The Dawn. As part of its release, she made this music video for the live version of the song And Dream Of Sheep, which was originally released back in 1985 on her album Hounds Of Love.

This time the description on the YouTube video does my job for me:

“This is a special piece of film to accompany the release of the live single ‘And Dream Of Sheep’. The vocal was performed live while filming Kate lying in the huge water tank at Pinewood Studios. This was to create a sense of realism, as the character in the song is lost at sea. However it became more realistic than Kate had imagined. She spent so long in the water during the first day of filming that she contracted mild hypothermia. She recovered after a day off and carried on filming. Everyone agreed it had added to the authenticity of the performance. This film was then projected onto a large oval screen which hung above the stage during the performances of her live show.”

Music Video of the Day: King Of The Mountain by Kate Bush (2005, dir. Jimmy Murakami)


I know I say it a lot, but it is all in the video. Is Elvis still alive? The pressures of being that famous. The fact that we didn’t know Elvis that well. We certainly know that outfit, but it told us about as much about Elvis as Rosebud did Charles Foster Kane in Citizen Kane (1941). I particularly love how they copy the ending of Citizen Kane. In that movie, we are dropped outside the gate the movie started on because we never got to know the person, but just visited a place that houses a collection of stories. Here, we also never got to know the person, and in the aftermath of his death, we only have memories, records, memorabilia, and theories that he isn’t just an influence on every musician out there, but literally out there somewhere. I also love how the articles about him go from dignified goodbyes to a mix of hope and outright exploitation of his legendary status. You get the same transition as the music video visually goes from a museum to wide-open spaces before we are tossed back to the museum, and finally the sled.

Jimmy Murakami of Heavy Metal (1981) fame directed it.

The only other person I found who had a notable credit was producer Michael Algar who produced some episodes of the 1987 TMNT TV Show.

Music Video of the Day: Moments Of Pleasure by Kate Bush (1993, dir. Kate Bush)


The song is about Bush remembering friends and family who have died. She spells that out for you visually at the end of the video as we see other people dance past her that she calls out to. From what I can find, Smurf is Alan Murphy who played on some of her albums and Bill is Bill Duffield, a lighting engineer, who died during a concert tour of hers in 1979. There are some others including her mother who died right around the time of making the album this song is on–The Red Shoes.

Music Video of the Day: Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush (1985, dir. David Garfath)


Diane Grey choreographed the video and Michael Hervieu is the other dancer. It’s pretty self-explanatory. It has do with relationships, exchanging places with your lover, etc. There are other blog entries out there that do good jobs talking about it–even in Kate’s own words. I will make special mention that it is not about exchanging places with God regardless of the crucifixion bit. Hopefully this blog entry is still up because it does a good job summarizing it.

I love it because it is simple, beautiful, and does a nice Twilight Zone type thing to have the lovers pulled apart near the end. Also, it stands out among other videos of the time. I’m not saying that it makes it any better, but sometimes it is nice to do something different, and I think that fits very well with Kate Bush.

The blog I linked to above says that MTV didn’t want to air this back then. That kind of surprises me. I get that it’s no Babooshka or Army Dreamers. However, Kate Bush is the first artist I’ve come across where when I recently bought two of her albums, I felt like I was only getting half the picture. The song Cloudbusting isn’t the same on its own. I would think that from MTV’s perspective, they would want something that people would come back to see rather than simply watch, buy the record, and move on. I know there are other circumstances, but I find it a little difficult to wrap my head around the idea that a lack of lip-syncing would be so much of an issue that they preferred to air a live performance of this song.

Director David Garfath has done camerawork on some notable films such as The Empire Strikes Back (1980), An American Werewolf In London (1981), and Brazil (1985).

Music Video of the Day: Them Heavy People by Kate Bush (1978, dir. Keith MacMillan)


I was originally planning on doing five political music videos this week. Then I decided I’d feature some beautiful things rather than things that remind people of fear and uncertainty. They’ll be plenty of other days to spotlight things like America by Kurtis Blow and the obscure Schizophrenic Breakdown by Chainmale. With that in mind, I am doing a video from each decade of Kate Bush’s career from the 1970s to the 2010s.

I know that Wow and Wuthering Heights are more well-known early Kate Bush videos, but I thought this one was appropriate for MLK Jr. Day that also happens to be Religious Freedom Day since the song is about having a desire to learn as much as possible. Also, it’s a pretty good introduction to what you can expect from Kate Bush: beautiful music videos, meaningful/heavy lyrics, interpretive dance/dancing, and being goofy at times.

She’s also known for her live performances, which makes sense considering videos like this one. There’s a video for Wow that is made up of a compilation of live performances, and you can see the two dancers from this video all over it. I remember reading someone’s comment somewhere that she worked with the same dancers for decades. Don’t quote me on that. However, it wouldn’t surprise me.

A little Easter Egg to look for is that Kate didn’t have her armpits shaved in this video. I only bring that up since a few years later Nena would get written up in British tabloids when she didn’t have them shaved during a tour in the UK.

Music Video of the Day: Don’t Give Up by Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush (1987, dir. Jim Blashfield)

Now we get to the other version of Don’t Give Up. Or as I like to call it, the literal interpretation of the song Don’t Give Up. I don’t know why this version was made, but if you have only seen the beautiful version directed by Godley & Creme, then this is worth watching. It focuses on the sad meaning of the lyrics. Gabriel and Bush barely make an appearance in the music video. We instead follow the people the song is singing about.

While I don’t know for sure why this music video was made, I have a theory. I think it’s a pretty good one too. So far I have only written about three music videos directed by Godley & Creme: Don’t Give Up, Rockit, and Two Tribes. They also directed Every Breath You Take by The Police. That’s the gorgeous music video that has an interesting behind-the-scenes story. Every Breath You Take is also one of the most notoriously misinterpreted songs. So misinterpreted that people have gotten married to it and even couples sent Sting letters saying it was their song. The music video only reinforces that by not looking like anything that resembles the meaning of the song. Something tells me that while I’m sure that Gabriel thought Godley & Creme made a wonderful video, he was probably well aware of what happened to Every Breath You Take. It is very easy to watch the music video and misread what the song is about because you are overcome by the single take, the eclipse, and the deeply touching constant embrace between Gabriel and Bush. I did. I didn’t know the meaning of the song till I sat down to write these two posts.

That’s my best guess as to why this music video was commissioned. It is nowhere near as good as the original. However, it does get the meaning of the song across better. You can read more about the origin of the song over on Songfacts.

Jim Blashfield seems to have directed about 10 music videos and produced a couple of them for Sesame Street. He is still around today. You can find more information on him at his website.

Missy Stewart was the production designer on this music video. In particular, some of her last ones were for director Gus Van Sant. It should come as no surprise that she would go on to work as a production designer on a couple of Gus Van Sant films such as Good Will Hunting (1997).
