In his long career, Charles Bronson found many different ways to kill the various bad guys that he encountered. One of my favorite “Bronson kills” is the hatchet 🪓 toss in LOVE AND BULLETS from 1979. Enjoy my friends!

Scenes That I Love: Pete Townshend and The Who at Woodstock
Today is Pete Townshend’s 80th birthday and today’s scene that I love features Pete Townshend (as a member of The Who) performing at Woodstock in 1969.
Roger Daltrey later said that this was the worst gig that they ever played and The Who did end up going on stage early in the morning, with the sun rising as they performed See Me, Feel Me. The majority of The Who’s performance was not included in the initial release of the Woodstock documentary but the noticeably grainy footage would later be included in various rereleases.
Unfortunately, no cameras recorded the moment when Pete Townshend became the hero that 1969 needed by kicking a ranting Abbie Hoffman off of the stage. But, audio of the incident survived.
Here is The Who at Woodstock:
Brad’s “Scene of the Day” – The 3 minute “no-cuts” sequence from HARD BOILED
Happy Birthday, Chow Yun-Fat!
John Woo’s HARD BOILED (1992) ends with a hospital siege and shootout that goes on for about 30 minutes. The action is very intense, and Woo creates a sequence within this set piece that goes almost 3 minutes without a single cut. It’s a masterpiece of directorial control by the legend, and it’s performed perfectly by Chow Yun-Fat, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Phillip Kwok and a large team of stuntmen. And it just looks really cool! Enjoy my friends!
Scenes I Love: Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt In Twister
Bill Paxton would have been 70 years old today.
Today’s scene that I love comes from Twister and it features Bill Paxton showing off some wonderful chemistry with Helen Hunt. One of the great things about Bill Paxton is that he was equally at home in both big blockbusters like Twister and Titanic and low-budget indies like Near Dark. He was an artist who also happened to be a star. As a lover of both films and eccentric Texans, I will always miss Bill Paxton.
Brad’s “Scene of the Day” – Chow Yun-Fat dances with Jodie Foster!
Chow Yun-Fat is one of the most charismatic men on earth. I’ve always enjoyed his performance in ANNA AND THE KING (1999) with Jodie Foster. He’s wonderful in this big budget American film, and he doesn’t even have to fire two guns! I know several women here in Arkansas who don’t know the first thing about Hong Kong movies, but they still love Chow based on this one film. On a side note, ANNA AND THE KING made over $113 Million at the worldwide box office, which means quite a few people in this world appreciate a more romantic Chow.
Enjoy this scene where the King of Siam surprises Foster’s English schoolteacher, and breaks all kinds of cultural norms, when he asks her to dance. It’s quite a charmer.
Scenes That I Love: Danny Trejo In Machete
The Shattered Lens wishes a happy birthday to Danny Trejo!
Today’s scene that I love comes from 2010’s Machete and it features Danny Trejo being a total badass! Check out that motorcycle!
Scenes That I Love: Joseph Cotten In The Third Man
Imagine being Holly Martins. You’re in Vienna, investigating the death of your best friend, getting chased by an angry mob and threatened by British intelligence, and suddenly you’re reminded that you, an author of dime-store novels, agreed to give a lecture on post-war literature.
That’s what happens in this scene that I love (featuring Joseph Cotten as Holly Martins) from The Third Man.
Scenes That I Love: Michael J. Fox Invents Rock and Roll in Back To The Future
Brad’s “Scene of the Day” – The revenge training sequence from FULL CONTACT (1992), starring Chow Yun-Fat!
One of my favorite Chow Yun-Fat action films is Ringo Lam’s FULL CONTACT. Up until FULL CONTACT, Chow Yun-Fat was mostly the suave hitman or tough cop in his action films. Here, he’s a man content with operating on the wrong side of the law to try to get ahead. Unfortunately, he is betrayed by his best friend and criminal cohorts and left for dead in a foreign country. This rock-fueled montage sequence shows him healing up and then preparing to take his revenge, while his best friend / betrayer tries to “be there” for his girlfriend who thinks he’s dead. It’s a badass, multi-fingerless, Chow Yun-Fat who wears bandanas, rides a motorcycle, hangs with a cute dog, and ultimately takes no prisoners. My guess is this scene will make you want to watch FULL CONTACT!
(Note: The video is frozen for the first 8 seconds. After that, the fun begins)
Scenes That I Love: Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart in The Philadelphia Story
On this date, 118 years ago, Katharine Hepburn was born in Hartford, Connecticut. She would go one to become a cultural icon, a performer who survived being labeled box office to poison to eventually become one of our most acclaimed actresses. Hepburn was a total of four acting Oscars over the course of her career, a record that has yet to be topped.
Today’s scene that I love comes from 1940’s The Philadelphia Story and it features Katharine Hepburn acting opposite another one of my favorite performers, the great James Stewart.
