Last night, Lisa Marie and I were talking about the songs we used to sing during road trips and this was one that we kept coming back to.

I think everyone, from our mom to our two older sisters to the gas station attendants to the people just trying to get some sleep in the hotel room next door, got sick of listening to us sing, “If you want to be my lover…”  Too bad!  We loved this song and still do.

I’m so glad we had fun, non-angsty pop stars to look up to when we were kids.  It’s such a difference from today.

Music Video of the Day: Yankee Rose by David Lee Roth (1986, directed by Peter Angelus and David Lee Roth)

You might not guess it from the music video but Yankee Rose was actually David Lee Roth’s tribute to the Statue of Liberty, which was going through major renovations for the 100th anniversary of its dedication when this song was released.

Of course, Roth knew what sold on MTV so the music video doesn’t feature the Statue.  Instead, it features Roth’s trademark humor, showmanship, and sexual innuendo.  In typical Roth fashion, it also starts out with a comedy sketch that would probably get the video taken down if it were released today.  Perhaps more than any other frontman, Roth is someone who truly epitomizes an era.

Roth directed this video, along with Peter Angelus.  Angelus also plays the sleazy playboy who appears at the start of the video.

Song of the Day: Brand New Key by Melanie

I can’t remember how old I was the first time that I heard this song but I do know I was pretty young.  I heard it while going through my mom’s record collection and I loved singing along to it.  For years, I thought this was just a cute song about roller skates.  I listened to it because every year, I had a brand new pair of skates too!  I liked to ride my bicycle too.  This song was fun!

Eventually, I actually started to pay attention to the lyrics and I realized the sone was actually about a lot more than skating!

Song of the Day: The Twilight Zone Theme by Marius Constant

Technically, the French composer Marius Constant did not set out to write the theme song for The Twilight Zone.  In the 50s, CBS commissioned Constant to compose a number of short pieces for CBS stock music library, basically as musical stingers that could be used for radio shows.  In 1960, when The Twilight Zone needed a theme song, an enterprising CBS employee combined two of Constant’s composition to create the iconic Twilight Zone theme.

Song of the Day: Theme From The Third Man by Alex Karas

Today’s song of the day is the haunting zither theme of The Third Man.  Whenever I hear this music, I immediately think of Orson Welles, emerging from the shadows with that charming smile on his face.  I also think about poor Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten), being chased through Vienna by that little kid who wouldn’t stop yelling at him.  And, of course, there’s that famous final shot….
