One good thing about being rich is that whenever you’re coming out of a relationship or you’ve been stricken by ennui or if you’re just not sure about the meaning of life, you can jump off an isolated cliff into the ocean and you can somehow survive and, to quote the title of today’s music video of the day, “live forever.”
Of course, it helps if you look like Liam Payne. I mean, those abs can do anything.
Since yesterday’s music video of the day was New Order’s first video for Blue Monday, it seems only appropriate that today’s video should be for Orgy’s cover of the same song. I’m usually not a huge fan of covers but Orgy brings their own unique interpretation to the song.
With Sunday’s release of the trailer for Wonder Woman 1984, the choice for today’s music video of the day is an obvious one. The trailer is memorably scored to New Order’s Blue Monday and the song even trended on twitter as a result. It’s a good song so here’s the video.
This is apparently the first of four different videos that were released, over the years, for Blue Monday. Val previously wrote about the 1988 version. This version is from 1983 and it’s definitely very much a product of the 80s. The song’s timeless, though.
I know there’s several interpretation as to what this song is about. I assume it’s about death but then again, that’s kind of my default interpretation as far as lyrics go.
Today’s music video of the day is a fun and energetic little video from Carly Rae Jepsen. Want You In My Room captures the giddy feel of preparing for a date. This is classic Carly Rae Jepsen, in that it’s sexy, fun, and kind of innocent all at the same time. Carly Rae’s from Canada and, based on the video and several episodes of Degrassi, I’m convinced that Canadians have a unique understanding of the joy of dancing on the beach.
This video was directed by Andrew Donoho, who has also done videos for twenty-one pilot, Jai Wolf, Zedd, and Skrillex. The cute guy at the end is played by producer Jimmy Loweree, who also appeared in Carly’s video for Now That I Found You.
Is Katy Perry married to Santa Claus? I guess I could see the appeal of that. I mean, Santa seems like he would at least always give you the perfect gift. For instance, Santa would never give you a Peloton for Christmas. He knows better. Actually, though, if I was Mrs. Claus, I might get a Peloton for Santa because I do sometimes suspect that Santa might not be getting much exercise up at the North Pole.
This is a cute video and I enjoyed it so I’m going to share it. I encourage everyone to watch and to read along. Seriously, make sure you read the whole thing. Jax appears to be doing better in her life, so good for her!
Myself, there were bits of this video that I related to and bits that I didn’t. That’s the way things go. We’re all individuals and we’re all going to have different experiences and different reactions. For instance, I agree with Jax about Long Island ice teas but I don’t drink coffee, either. Seriously, I have never been a coffee person and I guess that makes me unique among my circle of friends. Everyone else is like, “Let’s get a coffee and discuss it,” and I’m like, “Let’s do neither.” Or else they’re like, “Let’s have a glass of wine and talk about how much we love it when Tina Fey and Amy Poehler host an awards show.” and I’m like, “Yeah, how about not?” But, the important thing is not what we drink or what we watch but the fact that I agree with Jax’s overall conclusion. Chill the fuck out and enjoy life. Stop worrying about the stuff that doesn’t really matter. Find yourself. Host your own awards show and give yourself every trophy. You’ve earned them.
Now, before anyone starts in with, “Oh, Lisa’s going to talk about the end of the world, again,” I most definitely am not. The “Death From Above” that’s referenced in this song is literally the band Death From Above. In this video, the members of CSS even wear elephant masks as an homage from Death From Above, which is a nice gesture, I think. So, no, this song is not about a comet or a gigantic meteor smashing down on the Earth while the members of the band make love. Unless, of course, that’s how you really want to interpret it. As you know, I’m a big supporter of freedom of interpretation.
This was CSS’s first international single. It was taken off of their debut studio album, Cansei de Ser Sexy. Sadly, the song was a hit only in the UK. So, once again, the British got it right.
Today is Black Friday! This is the day when, all across the United States, people storm into stores and fight each other over …. well, everything.
Every year, there’s like a hundred think pieces decrying the commercialism of Black Friday and complaining that corporations are exploiting human weakness and that it’s a sad state of affairs and blah blah blah. Listen — I love Black Friday. Black Friday is where you prove what your worth and show just how far you’re willing to go to make sure that everyone you love has a merry Christmas. My sisters and I are expert Black Friday shoppers and yes, we still go out and hit the stores. We take the risk. We don’t hide behind online shopping. Not on Black Friday.
So, let’s hope that the Bowman sisters can summon half as much energy this Black Friday as Stray From The Path summons up in this video. Of course, I should point out that this song is very much against the madness of Black Friday. It attacks “American Greed” and basically taunts those of us who hit the sales. Well, that’s their right. I mean, I don’t think anyone can be shocked to discover that Stray From The Path is skeptical of capitalism run amok.
I have to say that I kind of got worried for Carrie while I was watching this video.
“You don’t know that man, Carrie!” I shouted, “Be careful!”
I’m not particularly a fan of country music but I’ve always liked Carrie Underwood, largely because she seems to be unpretentious and, all things considered, rather down-to-Earth. That said, when she was on American Idol, I was planning on voting for Bo Bice. But then Bo started singing songs acapella and I was like, “Uh, I don’t want to encourage that type of behavior.” I was legitimately torn between Carrie and Bo. In the end, if I remember correctly, I compromised by voting for Gary Johnson, instead.
Anyway, on a serious note, I don’t think Carrie Underwood could have pulled this song off 10 years ago. There’s a kind of sad “I’ve suffered real pain” feel to this song and it’s the type of thing that I imagine only comes with getting older and experiencing some real disillusion. That melancholy feel is there in the video, too. I mean, there’s a lot of quiet desperation going on here and it’s going to take more than a live performance of The Sound of Music to make everything okay again.
