What sets All of My Life apart from all of the other adult contemporary, “easy listening” music that Phil Collins released in the 90s is that saxophone solo at the start of the song. That sax solo almost makes up for all the bland Disney sons that Collins wrote in search of that first Oscar.
As for this video, it’s largely a performance clip but, mixed in, there are a few scenes of Phil Collins going about his everyday life. Of course, for Phil, everyday life meant a private plane and a luxury tour bus. What a likeable bloke! Personally, I don’t care how Phil Collins spent his money. As the saying goes, “If you’ve got it…”
This video was directed by Jim Yukich. Yukich was one of those video directors who, if you were a successful musical artist in the late 80s or the 90s, you would probably end up making at least one video with Yukich. Yukich directed videos for everyone from Iron Maiden to Genesis to REO Speedwagon. He got around.
I’m still taking in the news that Bruce Willis has retired from acting for health reasons. When I was growing up, Bruce was the closest thing we had to an old fashioned movie star. No one can beat the bad guys like Bruce Willis. No one could deliver a stone cold perfect one liner like Bruce Willis. No one could liven up a movie like Bruce Willis. No one could surprise you with an unexpectedly sensitive and good performance like Bruce Willis. As far as I’m concerned, he is still the epitome of cool.. Moonlighting, Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, 12 Monkeys, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Sin City, Looper, and more, Bruce Willis had quite a career and I think that his reputation as an actor will only grow as his performance are rediscovered and reevaluated.
Bruce Willis was not only an actor but he also a singer. In 1987, at the height of his Moonlighting fame, he released The Return of Bruno, an album the featured Bruce Willis covering several classic R&B tunes. To support the album, he toured in the the character of veteran singer, Bruno. Today’s music video of the day was originally a part of an HBO special that was designed to promote the album. Bruno remembers performing at Woodstock and covers Young Blood, which was originally recorded by The Coasters in 1957.
Wow, a Haim walking video that wasn’t directed by Paul Thomas Anderson! In all honest, though, Jake Schreier did a fine job directing this video and it’s a good song as well.
Enjoy!
Some things are long forgotten Some things were never said We were on one endless road But I had a wandering heart
I said we were opposite lovers Said it from the beginning You kept trying to prove me wrong Said you’d always see it through And I know that I ran you down So you ran away with your heart
But just know that I want you back Just know that I want you back Just know that I want you I’ll take the fall and the fault in us I’ll give you all the love I never gave before I left you Just know that I want you back Just know that I want you back Just know that I want you I’ll take the fall and the fault in us I’ll give you all the love I never gave before I left you
I know it’s hard to hear it And it may never be enough But don’t take it out on me now ‘Cause I blame it all on myself
And I had a fear of forgiveness Said it from the beginning I was too proud to say I was wrong Said you’d always see me through All that time is gone, no more fearing control I’m ready for the both of us now
So just know that I want you back Just know that I want you back Just know that I want you I’ll take the fall and the fault in us I’ll give you all the love I never gave before I left you Just know that I want you back (Just know that I want you) Just know that I want you back (Just know that I want you) Just know that I want you I’ll take the fall and the fault in us I’ll give you all the love I never gave before I left you (Just know that I want you back, baby)
Just know that I want you back Just know that I want you back Just know that I want you I’ll take the fall and the fault in us I’ll give you all the love I never gave before I left you Just know that I want you back Just know that I want you back Just know that I want you I’ll take the fall and the fault in us I’ll give you all the love I never gave before I left you
Just know that I want you back Just know that I want you back Just know that I want you I’ll take the fall and the fault in us I’ll give you all the love I never gave before I left you Just know that I want you back (Just know that I want you) Just know that I want you back (Just know that I want you) Just know that I want you I’ll take the fall and the fault in us I’ll give you all the love I never gave before I left you (Just know that I want you back, baby) (Just know that I want you) (Just know that I want you back, baby) I’ll take the fall and the fault in us I’ll give you all the love I never gave before I left you
Don’t fall too fast I’ve got this feeling that won’t ever last I never wanted to fall Caught in your trap Heart hits the ceiling, let’s go, don’t look back I’ve never wanted you more But I never wanted to fall
I never felt so good with the lights on I never understood you were the right one Cos I can’t stop thinking about your touch Don’t stop, it could never be too much Fall down, we could get back up
Slips through my hands A love so fleeting, I don’t understand I should have answered the call I never wanted to fall
We could keep this under the covers We could keep this all to ourselves But is that all that you wanted? Just us and nobody else You can’t tell me it’s not a problem When you’re stuck inside your head If you wanna keep on running I won’t be the one to bring you down
(For Evelyn, Emma, Amy, Shay, Katrina, Jenny, Ellie, Regina, Jackie, and all the rest of you)
Enjoy!
We go too far back You wouldn’t leave me now To find someone like that It wouldn’t be easy now
Cuz I been thinking bout getting drunk again at the same house where it all started and i love you so much that i didn’t care when you stained the carpet finding your clothes cuz you know I stole them you know I own them now
It’s how it’s gonna be Face it, loving me takes patience
When I think about us just leaving I think about us just coming home You hate it, but loving me takes patience We lose touch when I’m faded And it can get dark but still I know You’re waiting and loving me takes patience
We’ve had every fight There is no score to keep Chase down every sidewalk You’re walking home with me Talkin bout honesty
I been thinkin ’bout getting drunk again at the same house where it all started and i love you so much going up the stairs at your new apartment
It’s how it’s gonna be Face it, loving me takes patience
When I think about us just leaving I think about us just coming home You hate it, but loving me takes patience We lose touch when I’m faded And it can get dark but still I know You’re waiting and loving me takes patience
No one else could care It’s a waste of time To pretend I’d find someone out there I wouldn’t scare, cuz loving me takes patience
When I think about us just leaving I think about us just coming home You hate it, but loving me takes patience We lose touch when I’m faded And it can get dark but still I know You’re waiting and loving me takes patience
This music video has kind of an end of the world feel to it. I found myself suspecting that a comet probably crashed into Earth after filming stopped.
Enjoy!
This great composer is probably best known for his dream-like and haunting work for the films of David Lynch. Among the many songs and musical pieces that he’s done for Lynch, he composed the jitterbug music that opened David Lynch’s 2001 film, Mulholland Drive. The scene below features the perfect mix of Lynch’s visual vision and Badalamenti’s musical ear. What I especially like about this scene is that the music starts out as a very cheerful and vaguely generic but then it grows steadily more ominous as the scene plays out.
Here it is. The haunting opening of one of the best films of the current century:
Today, the Shattered Lens wishes a happy 91st birthday to William Shatner! Not only is William Shatner an actor, a director, a writer, a famed wit, and a legendary Canadian but he’s also a singer!
Here is William Shatner performing Somehow You Do. This song was written by Diane Warren and the video was directed by John Ottman.
