Happy Birthday in heaven to Randolph Scott, who was born on January 23rd, 1898. The picture above is from probably my favorite Randolph Scott film, RIDE LONESOME (1959). Scott made so many great movies, but my personal favorites are the series of westerns he made with director Budd Boetticher from 1956 – 1960. I highly recommend that you search those films out!
Randolph Scott made the film RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY with director Sam Peckinpah in 1962 and then retired from acting. Through his work in film and his excellent investments, he would pass away in 1987 as one of the richest men in Hollywood. I’m so glad that my movie hero Charles Bronson was able to work with Scott in the 1954 film RIDING SHOTGUN. Rest in peace, Mr. Scott!

As a latecomer to appreciating Randolph Scott, I am grateful for you pointing out those Boetticher films! I enjoyed ‘Seven Men From Now’ and The Tall T, and am happening upon the others much like a film flaneur upon the neighborhood cobblestones, so thank you, Brad! “Ride The High Country” is my touchstone for the traditional western. I’m a fan of the TV series “Justified” and watched it all the way though without understanding that the title was derived from Scott’s classic line, “all I want is to enter my house justified.”

Arthur Hunnicutt, who played the stagecoach driver in The Tall T, is from just down the road from our family cabin. Last Saturday, I was riding to the cabin with my parents on a rural country highway, and there was a guy walking down the highway. My dad knew the man and told me that he is Hunnicutt’s nephew. He lives along that stretch of highway and walks along there often. He’s in his 80’s. And I love that line “all I want is to enter my house justified.” I too have watched every episode of the series. Until this moment, I didn’t realize that connection. It’s actually been many years since I’ve watched Ride the High Country. It sounds like it’s time for a revisit! Thanks for the info!
