When I first heard that there was going to be a new Peanuts movie, I was excited but worried. As someone who grew up watching and loving the Charlie Brown holiday specials, I worried that the new movie would try too hard to update the characters and the humor for a new audience. I was worried that the movie would ruin all of my childhood memories of watching It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
However, the first two trailers have stayed true to the spirit of Peanuts. In the second trailer, Snoopy fights the Red Baron while Woodstock decorates for Christmas and Charlie Brown spills popcorn on himself. You can watch it below.
The Peanuts Movie comes out next year.
I had the same concerns upon learning of this production. The potential damage from the various forms of “updating” that could be attempted is profound. I’m not sure if I like the look of the digital animation. My main concern, however, from what is evidenced in the trailer, is the soundtrack. The auto-tuned dogfight song is quite bad. (Good grief! Did the Romantics knowingly authorize Katy Perry to rearrange their song?) I hope there won’t be hip-hop or syntho-pop or other lousy music inserted behind the action in an effort to appeal to young viewers, or for any other reason. It would be a travesty to cheapen a franchise that has so much heart with music that has no soul. Maybe this is in the trailer only.
I am glad to see this beloved part of entertainment culture perpetuated. I hope they don’t totally cheesify it, sonically or otherwise.
