Whisper was a pulp magazine that was published in the 40s and the 50s. It promised “a look through the keyhole” and the majority of the stories were about public and private scandals. Today, the scandals are forgotten but Peter Driben’s cover art is remembered and sought by collectors.
Here is a sampling of the covers of Whisper. All of these were illustrated (and signed) by pin-up artist Peter Driben. As with most of Driben’s pin-up covers, the models are meant to be both sexy and innocent at the same time. The headlines provide a look at what was once considered to be shocking in America.
High Heel Magazine was a pin-up pulp that run from 1937 to 1939. Though it only ran for a short amount of time, the risque covers have made the magazine popular with collectors of both pin-ups and pulp art. The covers almost always featured a woman who was often either showin off some leg or getting hit by a very high wind, stockings, and not surprisingly high heels.
Below are a few of the covers of High Heel Magazine. Where known the artist has been credited!
Guys got to Paris because their girlfriends can’t hang a picture? It’s not that hard. Maybe take off the high heels before you climb the step ladder though.
This is from 1954. The cover was done by Peter Driben, whose work has been shared on this site many times in the past and probably will be shared again many times in the future.
Beauty Parade was published, by Robert Harrison, from 1941 to 1956 and you can probably already guess what the magazine about. This was a pin-up magazine, full of articles and pictorials about Hollywood’s leading starlets. By today’s standards, Beauty Parade seems pretty tame and the pictures are pretty innocent when compared to what you can currently find on any newsstand (not to mention the internet). Back in the 40s or 50s, though, this was all considered to be very daring.
Here are a few of the covers of Beauty Parade! Racy back in the 40s, they seem quaint today.
Flirt Magazine was one of the many pin-up magazines that Robert Harrison published during the 40s and the 50s. Flirt was typical of the magazines of the era. It would feature articles about starlets along with pictorials featuring New York models. Basically, everything that you needed to know about the magazines, you could learn from the covers.

Silk Stocking Stories was published from 1946 and 1939 and it specialized in stories that, back in its day, were considered to be racy. By today’s standards, the stories may be tame but the covers remain popular with collectors. I believe all of the covers below were done by Peter Driben.
