The Three Covers of Reagan’s Raiders

Reagan’s Raiders was a comic book that ran for a total of three issues in 1987.  It imagined President Ronald Reagan as a super hero who, with the members of his administration, would fight evil around the world.  According to this article, a scientist had discovered a way to give them the bodies of young men.

It sounds like the comic books were meant to be satirical but the three covers make Ronald Reagan look like the greatest President that we’ve ever had.  (The cover of the second issue should be hanging in the White House, in my opinion.)  Here, just in time for the 4th of July, are the three covers of Reagan’s Raiders!

A Scene That I Love: Snoopy Plays The National Anthem in A Boy Named Charlie Brown

I shared this scene two years ago and then again last year but sometimes a scene is so great that you have to share it thrice.  Here, to honor America, is Snoopy performing the National Anthem.

I hope everyone has a great 4th of July!

4 Shots From 4 Films: Special Pete Walker Edition

4 Shots From 4 Films is just what it says it is, 4 shots from 4 of our favorite films. As opposed to the reviews and recaps that we usually post, 4 Shots From 4 Films lets the visuals do the talking!

Today, along with celebrating Independence Day, we are also celebrating the birthday of the great British director, Pete Walker!  Walker is 86 years old today and, if he’s not exactly a household name …. well, he definitely should be.  In fact, if there’s any director from the 70s and the early 80s who is deserves to rediscovered and reappraised, it’s Pete Walker!  He made exploitation films with wit and genuine suspense.  Frightmare is one of the scariest movies that I’ve ever seen.

In honor of Pete Walker’s birthday, here are….

4 Shots From 4 Films

Die Screaming, Marianne (1971, dir by Pete Walker, DP: Norman Langley)

The Flesh and Blood Show (1972, dir by Pete Walker, DP: Peter Jessop)

Frightmare (1974, dir by Pete Walker, DP: Peter Jessop)

Home Before Midnight (1979, dir by Pete Walker, DP: Norman Jessop)

Moments #23: The 4th of July In My Town

During the summer, from May to July, one of our local churches plants flags across the town and hangs ribbons on the street signs.  It may not seem like much but it’s something that I look forward to every year.  It’s reminder that we’re more than just a location.  We’re a community.

Celebrate Independence Day With Miss Victory!

With this being Independence Day weekend, it seems appropriate to take a moment and pay our respects to one of the first female super heroes of World War II, Miss Victory!  In an age dominated by super-powered men, she was a woman who simply decided that she could better aid her country by wearing a costume and fighting its enemies.  By day, she was Joan Wayne, a stenographer.  But, when America’s enemies needed a good beat down, she became Miss Victory!

Happy 4th of July!

My wife and I recently enjoyed a little weekend getaway to Branson, MO. Branson is a little “tourist town” in the Ozark Mountains just across the Arkansas state line, and it’s a place I’ve been visiting my entire life. One of my favorite things to do there is to take in an evening dinner cruise and show on the Showboat Branson Belle. The weather was perfect on the night of our cruise, and after enjoying some time on the top deck, my wife snapped this picture on our way back into the boat. This picture means so many things to me… along with a beautiful sunset and a moment in our lives that felt so perfect, it also captures a flag that stands for something special, something that I could never adequately put into words. A little later that evening all of the veterans of the armed forces in the audience were asked to stand and be recognized for their service to our country. Looking at those men and women who were standing, I felt those same feelings I had felt earlier looking at the flag. I still don’t have the perfect words, but I do know that we’re blessed. Happy 4th of July, friends!
