Music Video of the Day: Angel of the Morning by Juice Newton (1981, directed by ????)

On August 1st, 1981, MTV premiered.  Over the course of 24 hours, 166 unique music videos were played on MTV.  Yes, there was a time when the M actually did stand for music.

The 41st video played on MTV was this simple clip for the Juice Newton’s version of Angel of the Morning.  Written by Chip Taylor and originally recorded by Merrilee Rush in 1968, Angel of the Morning has been covered by numerous artists.  The Juice Newton version was one of the most successful and it led to Newton being the first country artist to appear on MTV.

And so we — or I guess that should be I — return after a few weeks’ absence, certainly none the worse for wear (in fact, dare I say feeling somewhat refreshed), but with plenty to catch you, dear reader, up on. To that end, the next batch of reviews are going to be whirlwind overviews of a number of comics I read over the course of my hopefully-well-earned (you can be the judge of that) break. And seeing as how I’ve wasted enough time recently as is, I think the best course of action is simply to jump right in —

God Bless The Machine By Connor McCann – Don’t look now, but the “Strangers Fanzine Presents” label is turning into the closest thing the comics world offers to a guaranteed mark of quality. Latest case in point : this artistic and conceptual thrill ride from Connor McCann…

Music Video of the Day: Remote Control and Illegal by The Silencers (1980, directed by ????)

On August 1st, 1981, MTV premiered.  Over the course of 24 hours, 166 unique music videos were played on MTV.  Yes, there was a time when the M actually did stand for music.

The 40th video played on MTV was the video for Remote Control and Illegal by The Silencers, a band that I know little about.  Because the person who uploaded the video to YouTube disabled playback, you’re going to have to click on “Watch on YouTube” to watch it.  It’s a good video and good song, though.  It’s very early 80s, in a good way.

Enjoy!

Scenes That I Love: The Ending of Breathless (R.I.P., Jean-Paul Belmondo)

I was saddened to learn of the death of French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo earlier today.  He was 88 years old and still an international icon of movie star charisma at the time of his death.

Belmondo spent the majority of his career in France, where he was one of the early faces of the New Wave and also a prominent action star, famed for doing his own very dangerous stunts.  In America, he was best-known for his starring turn in Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless.  In Breathless, Belmondo was the perfect existential outlaw, living life day-by-day and obviously doomed but still so incredibly magnetic and stylish.

In tribute to Belmondo, here is a scene that I love, the final moments of Breathless.
