Trailer: The Great Gatsby

Here is the trailer for the film that many people are predicting will be the major Oscar contender later this year, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (in 3D, as all films are nowadays).  I’m not totally sold on the idea of Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby (it seems like such a predictable and safe choice, to be honest) but I think Carey Mulligan is a great choice for Daisy and Tobey Magurie was born to play Nick Carraway.  Judging from the trailer, this film is either going to be brilliant or it’s going to be a huge mess.  Speaking as someone who loves F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel and who has often wished that her own voice might sound like money, I’m hoping it will be brilliant.

  1. Also a huge fan of the novel. The only part of the cast I don’t like is Maguire, mainly because I’m just not a fan of his. Totally love the visuals, but I’m worried it might be a bit too “cinematic”; the glitz and glam is perfect for the the parties but I don’t think it will work throughout the whole story. But we shall see. Still one of my most anticipated of the year…oh, and I really wish they hadn’t opened the trailer with KanyeWest/JayZ.

  2. I find Clayton’s 74′ adaptation to be rather lifeless. It has a good look, is pretty damn faithful, and Redford and Farrow make a good Gatsby/Daisy, but it isn’t as if it is anywhere near the definitive adaptation and someone could certainly come along and make a better version; and much of what Luhrmann seems to have done here works, visually he has the right eye for a glitzy period piece and if he can offset all that glam and show a real hollowness under the surface it just might be a great adaptation.

Plus I’m not sure how this being an adaptation means Baz needs new ideas. A remake of the novel has been swirling around Hollywood for years and I can’t criticize Luhrmann for taking on the project.

Also, after ‘Hugo’ and its successful use of 3D, I’am personally not in anyway worried or turned off by its use here.
