Music Video of the Day: Miss Independent by Kelly Clarkson (2003, dir by Liz Friedlander)

Hearing this song transports me back to 2003, when life seemed so simple and the future seemed limitless… actually, that’s the way things still seem to me in 2018.  I guess I’m a born optimist!

Anyway, I always think of this as being a song of liberation but that’s mostly just because of the title.  The lyrics are actually about an independent woman finding the courage to let people into her life.  But, ultimately, what matters is how a song — any song — makes you feel.

As for the video, I would say it features just about the safest house party that I’ve ever seen.  Compare it to the video for Fiona Apple’s Criminal.

Music Video of the Day: You Don’t Get Me High Anymore by Phantogram (2016, dir by Grant Singer)

This video from Phantogram (who are like one of my favorite musical duos of all time) puts me in the mood for apocalypse.  The starkness of the interiors reminds me of David Lynch.  The crashing waves reminds me of Jeff Nichols’s Take Shelter.  And then, of course, you’ve got the whole Ex Machina thing going on as well.

This video was directed by Grant Singer, who has directed videos for pretty much everyone.  Well, maybe not everyone by he has worked with Taylor Swift, which is just as good.  He’s also done videos for Lorde, The Weeknd, Ariel Pink, Sleigh Bells, and Skrillex.

Music Video of the Day: Don’t Leave Me Alone by David Guetta, featuring Anne-Marie (2018, dir by Hannah Lux Davis)

This video reminds me of … well, almost every recent futuristic dystopia movie that I’ve ever seen.  You’ve got the large but kinda messy apartment.  You’ve got the virtual reality.  And you’ve got the really, really bright sun.

Seriously, have you ever noticed that?  Futuristic dystopias are always either extremely dark and rainy or extremely bright.  It’s like, in the future, people aren’t allowed to close the curtains or pull down the shades on a sunny day.  I don’t know if I’d be able to handle that.  Hopefully, the robots won’t take over anytime soon.

Music Video Of The Day: My Own Summer by Deftones (1997, dir by Dean Karr)

Since it’s shark week on the SyFy Network, I figured this would be as good a time as any to share this shark-related video.

In this video, the Deftones perform while standing on shark cages.  Which … I don’t know.  That, honestly, is something that I would never do.  It just seems like you’re inviting trouble and, to prove my point, Chino Moreno does fall into the water while performing.  Apparently, Chino survived being attacked by the shark because he’s still around.  Maybe he’s like Felix Leiter in the James Bond novels and he’s bionic now.

To quote Mr. Big in Live and Let Die: “He disagreed with something that ate him.”

Anyway, this video was directed by Dean Karr, who has directed music videos for everyone from Korn to Lisa Marie Presley.

Music Video of the Day: Deepest Bluest (Shark Fin) by LL Cool J (1999, dir by Renny Harlin)

Seeing as how this is shark week on the SyFy network and I reviewed both Deep Blue Sea and Deep Blue Sea 2 on Sunday, it seems appropriate that today’s music video of the day should feature LL Cool J turning into a shark.

I mean, doesn’t it!?

Anyway, this is one of the songs that plays over the end credits of Deep Blue Sea.  The video was directed by Renny Harlin and features several clips from the film.  And, of course, LL Cool J turns into a shark.

Music Video of the Day: The Heat Is On by Glenn Frey (1984, dir by ????)

I picked this video for one reason.

Check out my weather forecast for the next few days:

That’s right!  Today and tomorrow, the temperature is supposed to get up to 109 degrees!  Then on Monday, it’ll only get up to 108 and we’ll finally get some relief on Tuesday when the high plunges down to 101!

Indeed, the heat is on.

(It could be worse.  Yesterday, they were saying that the high would hit 110 on Saturday.  We’ve gone down a degree!  Yay!)

Seriously, the heat in Texas is so bad that, on Thursday, I could barely even drive home.  I had to steer with my finger tips because it was literally impossible for me to grip the steering while without burning my hands!  If I have to spend this summer driving with oven mitts on my hands, I’m not going to be in a good mood…

As for the song, it was written for the 1984 film, Beverly Hills Cop.  The video features clips from that film, mixed in with footage of an editor working in the heat and the band bringing the heat.

Anyway, on a serious note, be careful out there everyone.  Keep your pets inside.  It might be a good idea to keep yourself inside too.  Usually I hate the idea of wasting a weekend but, when it’s this hot, you really don’t have much choice but to spend a few days being lethargic.

Seeing as how today is Moon Day, this seems like the perfect time to pick this video for music video of the day!

This is from Public Service Broadcasting’s 2015 album, The Race For Space.  As you can probably guess from the title, every song deals with the American/Soviet space race of the 50s, 60s, and 70s.  Go!, the eighth track from the album, deals with the first moon landing.

Music Video of the Day: Mojo by Peeping Tom, featuring Rahzel, Dan The Automator (2006, dir by Matt McDermitt)

This video was released 12 years ago.  Watching it today, it’s interesting that television hasn’t changed much.  The cop show, the infomercial, the porn film, the horror film, the evangelist, every single one of them is currently playing somewhere.

Yes, that is Danny DeVito sitting on the couch at the end of the video.  I like to think that he’s meant to be Frank Reynolds.

Music Video of the Day: Lilac by Blue Hawaii (2018, dir by ????)

This is an interesting video.

On the one hand, it leaves me wishing that I was on a beach somewhere, preferably Hawaii but I’d even settle for Daytona.  Maybe not Atlantic City, though.  That’s way too far up north.  And don’t even get me started on the beaches in Maine.

On the other hand, it also leaves me worried that something really, really bad is about to happen.  It’s a video that manages to be both positive and ominous at the same time.
