Music Video of the Day: Talk of the Town by The Pretenders (1981, directed by ????)

On August 1st, 1981, MTV premiered. Over the course of 24 hours, 166 unique music videos were played on MTV. Yes, there was a time when the M actually did stand for music.

The 52nd video to air on MTV was the video for Talk of the Town by The Pretenders.  Unlike some of the other videos that aired on that day, the video for Talk of the Town still looks impressive.  Though it’s been rumored that the song was about Ray Davies, Chrissie Hynde has said that the song was inspired by a fan who used to quietly watch the band during all of their soundchecks.

On August 1st, 1981, MTV premiered. Over the course of 24 hours, 166 unique music videos were played on MTV. Yes, there was a time when the M actually did stand for music.

The 49th video to play on MTV was the video for Blondie’s Rapture, which only aired once on that date despite being better remembered than many of the videos that played multiple times.  The 50th video was The Who’s Don’t Let Go The Coat.  This was the Who’s second video to air on MTV, after You Better You Bet.

That brings us the 51st video.  Rod Stewart’s Ain’t Love A Bitch was one of 11 Rod Stewart videos that were played on MTV’s first day.  In fact, Rod Stewart was by far MTV’s most popular artist when it premiered.  It’s tempting (and probably correct) to say that today’s MTV viewers probably has no idea who Rod Stewart is but then again, today’s MTV viewers aren’t watching music videos to begin with.

On August 1st, 1981, MTV premiered.  Over the course of 24 hours, 166 unique music videos were played on MTV.  Yes, there was a time when the M actually did stand for music.

The 47th video played on MTV was the video for He Can’t Love You by Michael Stanley Band.  I hadn’t heard this song nor did I know much about this band up until a few days ago but I have to give credit where credit is due.  This is a good song and a good video.  The video, including the hospital scenes, was filmed in a Los Angeles factory that manufactured shopping carts and, more so than the many performance-orientated videos that also aired on the station’s first day, it indicated the direction that would soon be taken by both MTV and music videos in general.

On August 1st, 1981, MTV premiered.  Over the course of 24 hours, 166 unique music videos were played on MTV.  Yes, there was a time when the M actually did stand for music.

The 46th video to played on MTV was the music video for Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk.  This video is unique because, for once, the members of Fleetwood Mac look as if they are actually enjoying each other’s company.  Admittedly, John McVie was on vacation when this video was shot, which is why he’s represented by a cardboard cutout.

This video was filmed at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles.  A mobile studio had been installed so that the University of Southern California’s Trojan Marching Band could record their part of the song.  The participation of the Trojans helped Tusk to set a record for the number of musicians who appeared on one single.  At the time, there were 112 members of the band.  The Trojans later received a Platinum record as a recognition for their participation in the recording of Tusk.

The 45th video played on MTV was this energetic performance clip for Lee Ritenour’s Is It You?  This was the 2nd Lee Ritenour video to be featured on MTV, following Mr. Briefcase.  Just as with Mr. Briefcase, the vocals are provided by Eric Tagg.

The 43rd video that played on MTV was the video for Hold On To The Night by Bootcamp, a band based in my former home of Baltimore, Maryland!  The video for Bootcamp was followed by this video for Dreamin‘ from the dependable Cliff Richard.  Though Cliff never became as big a star in the States as many people expected him to, he’s a cultural icon back in the UK.

The 42nd video played on MTV was Rockpile covering the Elvis classic Little Sister.  As you can see in the video, they received some help from Robert Plant.  Like the video for Rockestra’s cover of Lucille, this performance was a a part of the Concert for The People of Kampuchea.

The 41st video played on MTV was this simple clip for the Juice Newton’s version of Angel of the Morning.  Written by Chip Taylor and originally recorded by Merrilee Rush in 1968, Angel of the Morning has been covered by numerous artists.  The Juice Newton version was one of the most successful and it led to Newton being the first country artist to appear on MTV.

Music Video of the Day: Remote Control and Illegal by The Silencers (1980, directed by ????)

On August 1st, 1981, MTV premiered.  Over the course of 24 hours, 166 unique music videos were played on MTV.  Yes, there was a time when the M actually did stand for music.

The 40th video played on MTV was the video for Remote Control and Illegal by The Silencers, a band that I know little about.  Because the person who uploaded the video to YouTube disabled playback, you’re going to have to click on “Watch on YouTube” to watch it.  It’s a good video and good song, though.  It’s very early 80s, in a good way.
